  6. Well today was another school day for me. My daughter asked me to check out this 'ant' carrying a spider. It appears that this is a #dipogon #wasp carrying a #crabspider Until today I had never really considered spider wasps in the UK, only being aware of the classic tarantula hawk wasp that appears on nature documentaries (and has a special mention on the Schmidt sting pain index). This is of a different scale at around 10mm but what a joy to see in the back garden!

  8. The #crabspider #Ebrechtella #tricuspidata has a #palearctic native range and is widely distributed, but in Europe appears more often in the East and South. In Germany it is considered not very abundant, but common. It prefers warmth exposed moist areas. H. Guo et al. (2025) found that #femalechoice is focused on the #malesize only, while #male'choice (when #mating experienced) is towards #virginfemales.

I'll have to post the female tomorrow, because the species is sexually dimorphic. They look nothing alike, but both deserve to be shown off.

One of the smaller Crab spiders, but a conspicuous one.
They are supposed to be able to change their colour to match their surroundings, although it will take them a few days.
