  1. took the fancy camera to high park this morning!

i was mostly looking for galls for #GallWeek but i also saw plenty of sand wasps enjoying the sun, and a coyote! i was walking away from it but it crossed the street to avoid me anyway and a car that was going too fast had to stop for it 🙄

(there are Plans to gradually #BanCars in High Park, people are big mad)

  2. Aphid wasp (Pemphredon sp.) on a fava bean leaf. These are cavity nesters and will cram dozens of paralyzed aphids into a hollow stem for a single larva to consume. Apparently very fond of roses so save the bigger branches for your insect hotel when you prune them. #wasps #aphids #insects #hymenoptera #crabronidae #roses

  3. Mystery #Crabronidae wasp continues to be a mystery. Rather distinctive red-black colloration; one of a kind, had never seen this species at this location.

  5. By a sandy path along a road in High Park there's lots of these little hills, and if you wait you'll see what seem to be yellowjackets flying low around them. I thought at first they were bees like _Colletes_, but now I think they are beewolves, solitary, ground-nesting crabronid wasps in the genus _Philanthus_. They prey on bees like sweat bees (Halictidae) to provision their larvae with in the tunnels they dig.

They're shy and will duck back into their burrows when you approach, but if you wait you'll see them crawling on the ground looking for places to burrow, or backing out of their tunnels kicking sand behind them.

  6. Eastern cicada killer (Sphecius speciosus) on summersweet. I love these wasps but dread the hate that surfaces on Nextdoor and Facebook every August. Cicada killers are seriously large but they just want to collect cicadas for their kids, aerate your lawn, and drink nectar. There's no need to call the pesticide company. #wasps #insects #entomology #nature #clethra #pollinators #crabronidae

  7. A true story…

so my wife recently bought some dressmaking pins… I had a look at them and I was immediately like: “I have plans for you, my beauties” 😈

Quite pleased with how I nailed this through the thorax at the first attempt. I have yet to pin it down to a species-level ID though, so if you know what it is please holler.
