That's the premise of RollerGirl, a slice-of-life adventure game that Indie Games Plus got to try at Gamescom in Cologne.
The structure is refreshingly loose. Instead of following one narrow path, you skate around town, meet the locals, and choose which odd jobs to take. The jobs really are odd: a strange man wants your trash for some kind of collection, two neighbors are feuding because each is convinced the other is leaving threatening notes, and there's a bit of teenage romance mixed in. Every task earns a little money toward fixing the car, a simple loop that gives the wandering a purpose.
The small-town feeling is where the game seems to shine. Everybody knows everybody, and there's a twist: people don't really see you as your own person. They keep bringing up your brother and the legacy he left behind, treating you as an extension of him. That hints at a more personal story beneath the chores.
Atmosphere matters too. The weather changes, and when rain rolls in, the town turns grey and a little strange while the music shifts with the mood. Exploring pays off beyond cash, because hidden corners hold secrets, including new songs for your player.
There's one notable rough edge. The protagonist has a strong personality, and you pick replies that reflect how she feels, but the townsfolk often don't respond to what you actually said. The preview found this gap between your choices and the conversation jarring. In a game built on talking to locals, that can break the spell quickly. It could also be intentional, a sign that the town doesn't really listen to you because it only sees your brother.
RollerGirl has no release date yet, which leaves time for polish. It fits a growing trend of cozy indies that trade big stakes for small, personal stories and let players set their own pace, a close cousin to Littlehaven with more skating and fewer building menus. If the writing lands and the rain-soaked, music-filled town holds up over longer sessions, it could appeal to fans of laid-back games like Toem 2 or music-driven indies like Mr. Records.
Do mismatched dialogue responses ruin a conversation-heavy game for you, or could they work as deliberate storytelling?

Good morning everyone 🌞 I'm finally off the leash and able to relax with the parrots this morning. And I have a long weekend as I am off Monday, so happy days 😁
I barely had a moment to sit with Ziggy today though as she started wanting "Come! Come!" almost as soon as she came out. I could tell she was hungry because she started making baby parrot noises and trying to get into my mouth with her beak. 🙂 She will also make baby parrot noises when she wants to play fight and at those times I can easily turn her over on her back as we wrestle. She bites hard when she plays fights, but the trust she puts in me by exposing herself like that more than makes up for it.
What does a baby parrot noise - Hahns Macaw variety - sound like you ask? I imagine very much like a baby dinosaur would sound like - a "rawr, rawr" type of sound 😊
No orders again this week so I am once again at my leisure. Not a bad thing as I am struggling with energy levels at the moment. When I was first diagnosed with mecfs I read about it a lot and discovered that people with the condition have a degraded gut biome. So, early on I started topping up with pre and pro biotics and that definitely helped with energy. But also for years now I have been having guts issues and after umpteen tests and doctor visits I recently pinpointed the issues down to those self same biotics. I stopped taking them and like magic no more gut issues, but my energy levels have tanked 🤷🏻♀️
So not much in the way of plans for today, but I may play a bit on my Steam Deck.I have a bunch of relaxing cozy games to choose from. There's Fields of Mistria, which I am really enjoying - the amount of dialogue is just insane, Kynseed which I was recommended but need to get into, and of course Stardew Valley. I haven't modded it yet though, so planning to do that first before I play it on the deck.
