In the grassy meadow area surrounding the lighthouse were several female Brown-headed Cowbirds. They were very approachable, like within six feet or less. They were catching and eating small bees and wasps in the meadow. Cowbirds are obligate brood parasites. In other words, they lay their eggs in the nests of other small birds. I've seen this here in our own yard with Dark-eyed Junco nests. #birding #birds #birdsofmastodon #BHCO #cowbird #nature #naturephotography #birdphotography

It was 73F/23C today and I went birding in short sleeves. In 2 days it will snow and then I will bird in snowboots (*shrugs*). TIL why cowbirds do what they do. They evolved on the Great Plains in a symbiotic relationship with grazing animals, eating insects kicked up by the herds. When the herds moved, the cowbirds moved, leaving them no opportunity for nesting; so they “borrowed” other bird's nests.
As agriculture expanded and domestic herds spread across the Americas, the cowbirds followed, invading the nests of the indigenous birds wherever they went, none of which had defenses against the cowbird parasitism.
