  1. CW: death stats vs covid variants, interesting analysis

Interesting thread from @mike_honey_, comparing different covid variants with what the death stats were doing at the time.

Those differences between wastewater and clinical are interesting.

    Some naive explanations:
    1. More relative abundance in clinical is due to greater severity of variant -> increased medical interaction.
    2. Less relative abundance in clinical is due to variant being more active in the gut -> increase in wastewater.

If the aged care data showed variants then maybe we could see one of these explanations fitted with that better.

  3. Highly mutated COVID variant ‘Pirola’ JN.1 may be the beginning of a new chapter in the pandemic, some experts said. Now its descendants are spawning—and appear to be on a path to dominance.

A quarter of the world’s countries are still providing #COVID data to the WHO—less than 50 of 193 nations, most located in Europe and America.

  4. "It may feel like we should all be done with Covid-19, but sadly Covid-19 is not done with us."

Clear and insightful article by Professor Sheena Cruickshank on the continuing covid threat, and on how current covid policies and feed the evolutionary pressures that bring about new variants.

  7. 2/ 🧵

Upcoming concerning COVID variants (as per Federico Gueli on the bird app) and decoding lineages.
If any of this is wrong pls to let me know, I'm not officially anything sciencey 😵

(Gosh, these variant hunters are gonna need secretaries 👀)

Greater-than (>) designates variants already found in the USA.

    Most immediate:
    BA.2.86* (Pirola)
    Me adding: JN.1* (BA.2.86.1.1*)

  8. COVID variant tracking is getting...complicated, so I wrote out a thing to help myself keep all this straight.

A short 🧵, going to keep all this searchable/public.

    Informal kicknames:

    BA.2.75–Centaurus
    BQ.1–Typhon (BA.5.3.1, BA>BE>BQ)
    CH.1.1–Orthrus
    XBB.1.5–Kraken
    XBB.1.9--Hyperion
    XBB.1.16–Arcturus
    XBB.2.3–Acrux
    BA.2.86–Pirola
    EG.5–Eris (from Hyp)
    FL.1.5.1 -- Fornax

In the coming posts these will be pretty darn useful as you'll see!

  9. BA.2.86 fears fizzle as other #COVIDvariants drive up hospitalizations, deaths
Three preliminary studies suggest BA.2.86 may not be the scary subvariant some feared. Increasing rates of hospitalizations, emergency department visits, and deaths—all driven by the current gang of circulating #COVID #omicron subvariants, led in the US by EG.5, FL.1.5.1 and XBB.1.16.6. No single variant is dominant globally, though EG.5 is on the rise. arstechnica.com/health/2023/09

  10. “We desperately need to pursue a variant-proof vaccine…

All of us wish this was behind us, but it’s not. Facing that fact this virus, in one version or another, will be with us for many years to come, rather than denialism and complacency, is critical.

At the moment there’s no reason for alarm.”
Important perspective IMO. Taking things scientifically, seriously, but in non-alarmist way. From @erictopol

  11. I do not like having to play "allergies or COVID".

    RT @tmprowell
If you or your kids have red, itchy or sticky eyes, it may actually be the latest #COVID19 variant, XBB.1.16 (#XBB116). Do a test. This is a symptom we didn’t see often with past #COVIDvariants, so it’s easy to mistake it for allergies. #MedTwitter

  12. @Lorrrraaaaine @tomchappell

China is the ideal Petri dish for
the virus. more than a billion opportunities to test out mutations. It is highly likely in a couple of month we will deal with a totally different virus again.
