  1. Sicily, six years ago. Covid lockdown in effect. Our friend got trapped ashore, living on his boat atop a ladder, work unfinished and unable to launch, even if there had been a crane operator.

The boatyard workers gave him the key to the gate and told him they were shutting down until further notice, good luck and by the way there's no running water.

They left him "Merkel" the boatyard dog, too.

  2. As ‘Make in India’ Enters 10th Year, What Does the Government’s Silence Mean?

For a government that thrives on events and celebration, the eerie silence during the lead-up to this important anniversary is a possible indication that it has accepted that glitzy PR is no longer sufficient to hide the perilously weakened manufacturing sector.

  3. Book review: A scathing indictment of what was done by an administration to a people unprepared for a pandemic

A review of Harsh Mander's 'Burning Pyres, Mass Graves and a State That Failed Its People: India’s Covid Tragedy'. As he journals the length and breadth of India, one cannot help but give Mr Mander credit for the number and range of real-life anecdotes he has attempted to document here.

  4. How Modi colonises our minds

The convening of the special session of Parliament is prime minister’s method of dominating the minds of supporters and critics alike, which is driven by his fear of losing elections, writes Ajaz Ashraf.

  6. During the Covid lockdowns, Ryan Howard started building a replica of Johnny 5 from the 1986 film Short Circuit. The work really is amazing and I hope other people really share in the joy of what he's achieved.

  7. CW: COVID, lockdowns

We went into #COVIDLockdown early in 2020, so we get to 'celebrate' The Event earlier than most. I do not miss the existential dread, the ludicrous workload, or the fortnight of rationing food because we couldn't risk leaving the house to go shopping (shout out to all the other #ECV households), but I do miss the lack of a precanned excuse to avoid socialising, the creativity of cobbling together remote teaching, and the fact I didn't wear (under)pants for nearly 9 months.
