  1. For queers and allies in Victoria who are still taking covid precautions, i am passing along an invitation to a discussion group:

  2. Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC):

"Updated vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech are scheduled to arrive in provinces & territories by next week [of Oct 7, 2024]. Pharmacies and public health units, or their local equivalents, will then distribute the products."

    Updated mRNA vaccines:
🦠target the Omicron subvariant known as KP.2, now dominant
🩹can reduce the risk of infection
    🤒effective at reducing disease severity

  3. FYI, I put ~$45 worth of my favorite Canadian masks (vitacore's CAN99 stuff, link in thread). Shipping was a little exorbitant, so I left without checking out.

A bit later I got an email, and after replying to say I was shopping around because I'm on a budget, they called me and offered a $5 flat shipping rate for anything under $50 (they also offer free shipping >$100).

Comfy masks, Canadian, and a personal touch → an easier decision to place the order. #covid19canada #covid19 #maskup

  4. Stats on #Covid19Canada by Statistics Canada are not surprising, given drop in health precautions in provinces:

    🔺1 in 9 Canadian adults experienced #LongCovid, affecting #QualityOfLife + productivity daily

🔺two-thirds of Cdn adults who tried to get healthcare services for long-term symptoms have not received enough treatment or support

    🔺adults who tested positive/suspected of Covid19 increased from 39% in Summer 2022 to 64% by June 2023

  5. Nothing to see here. 🫣 Just 39 schools in Alberta's 3 largest cities on outbreak status. Likely over 50 if we could see absence rates at Calgary and Edmonton Catholic. #CovidIsNotOver #CovidIsAirborne #Covid19Canada x.com/YYCCowboy/status/1735119

  6. Limiting transmission is still the most important public health goal. We know how to do that but are reluctant to employ the tools. Masking and cleaning the air. Rigorous surveillance testing is also essential to inform citizens of the advancing or retreating COVID risks.

    Canada #Covid19 hazard index projections: Sept 23-Oct 6, 2023.

    Severity levels are way up.

Mitigation seems to be slow and spotty so far.

Action should have been taken by end of August 2023, referring to grid chart displaying weekly increasing severity levels from Aug 13 to Sept 24, 2023.

  8. From the BC CDC on BA.2.86 sub variant just detected.
"“It was not unexpected for BA.2.86 to show up in Canada and the province. The risk to people in B.C. has not changed. COVID-19 continues to spread globally, and the virus continues to adapt. Reducing transmission and having high levels of protection through vaccination continue to be our best defence against all variants of COVID-19. People who are vaccinated are less likely to get seriously ill from COVID-19 or require hospitalization.”

"“We urge all people in B.C. to continue to follow public-health advice and to stay home when sick, wear masks when appropriate, follow respiratory etiquette, wash hands frequently, and, most importantly, stay up to date on your vaccinations.”

    Time to Mask Up. 😷

  9. #Covid19 is most definitely on the rise in #Edmonton this summer. While this data is still two weeks behind, we can see that the new variant(s) are breaking through our fading immunity. And wastewater virus levels were doubling every two weeks (which means cases were doubling too). #Covid19AB #Covid19Canada

  12. We’d like to think that because acute #Covid is often (though not universally) mild, it’s nothing to worry about. But long Covid most often occurs after mild disease.
Some people are convinced that Covid “only” matters if the person who gets it is elderly, immune compromised, chronically ill or disabled.
But #LongCovid also appears in young, previously healthy and highly active people, including children.

  13. @lakelady
Absolutely, thank you for saying this.

For Canadians, the picture looks like this:

    Confirmed Covid Deaths in Canada

2020: 16,763 took some hits figuring this thing out
2021: 13,852 applied some of the lessons we learned
2022: 18,848 threw what we learned in the trash

    Definitely not over…

And that just the easiest thing to measure, wait until Long Covid and other Covid damage comes home to roost.
