Goodness, the history of droplet theory ... it's over 100 tweets! :)

Well I guess I'm between books anyway!
Next up? Did you know the 6 foot rule came from the mid-1600s?*
Not joking.

Re airborne/droplet confusion -
Indeed. I blame the WHO first and foremost, for their stubborn refusal to (a) listen to scientists raising the alarm, (b) deploy caution in the PPE recommendations till it was proven one way or the other. See e.g. their legendary misinformation-tweet claiming explicitly that covid _wasn't_ airborne.
And after them, I blame every government which (a) ran with that misinformation and sent it everywhere, (b) made no effort to correct it after the WHO quietly conceded they were wrong.
I often think of that saying about how a lie can run round the world before the truth has got its boots on. It's like that, except with the WHO and governments never actually making an effort to send the truth after the lie.
For the people who believed it, I still mostly just have sympathy. The information-landscape out there for covid is and was a minefield. Being a science geek is protective though!

"This is a cedar tree and it's releasing pollen from its male cones. The pollen is meant to be airborne and it produces a lot of pollen to reach the female cones, which might be miles away."

This is an interesting tidbit of information from Henry.
"“The global hypothesis is that the infection, the exposure to the rat feces, or whatever in the dry area that they were in, happened before they arrived on the cruise ship,” she said. “It was a couple from the Netherlands. So then they both became ill, whether they both had the initial exposure, or whether the wife was exposed to her husband once he became ill.””
Specifically: ”the dry area”
Reports are that it was a bird watching expedition to a landfill that is the primary suspect for the source of the exposure. Which, in my mind, means the hantavirus can spread through contact with dirt either on the bottom of a shoe, or on particles in the wind in a dry dusty environment.
That doesn't quite give me confidence that it is not “airborne”... but… ok.

I think about Carney's broken CBC funding promise and the treasonous cuts he's planning, all while CBC reporters dutifully cheerlead his manly leadership and both-sides every austerity-related horror. CBC journalists are right there in the Canadian Dictionary under "false consciousness." #cbc #cbcnews #canada #canpoli #covidIsNotOver #coviDisAirborne

This piece by @onqueerstreet is pure 🔥🔥
I am trying to get better at wearing a mask again. The book event email prompted me to stock up on my favorite black FFP2 masks, but I’m definitely not perfect. Starting masking again in 2025 means I – we – have to confront the fact that maybe we should never have stopped. It’s scary to admit that we might have been harming ourselves and our communities; that our government might not have our best interests at heart.
In 2025, wearing a mask is a sign of resistance in an increasingly authoritarian society. It’s a show of solidarity with disabled people. But even if you can’t mask, there are ways to show up and care for the people in your community. Our liberation is interconnected, and so must our efforts to keep each other safe.

«Die Fehleinschätzung der #WHO beruhte indes nicht auf einem Mangel an sachkundiger Information, im Gegenteil: Eine internationale Expertengruppe aus Bereichen der Medizin, der Physik und den Ingenieurwissenschaften hatte mehrmals an die WHO appelliert, sie möge ihre Annahmen bezüglich der Übertragung von #SARSCOV2 überprüfen.»

Today, at a swing social:
Him: aren’t you exhausted from wearing a mask?
Me: yes (thinking: mostly b/c ppl make such dumb remarks about it)
Him: I think it’s part of your style. Do you wear it everywhere?
Me: er?
Him: like in bed? Do you wear it in bed? You should!
Me: 👁️👄👁️I did ask if he was implying that I was probably quite ugly, but he said no.

The ventilation standard that addresses COVID would be ASHRAE 241 IRMMhttps://itsairborne.com had a series of articles about it

Neat study, potential positives if heeded, if conclusions integrated into hospital infection control practices (ha ha)… :
“Conclusion“During community epidemics, SARS-CoV-2 genetic material is detected in hospital air despite good ventilation. Enhanced protection with masks, vaccines, and portable air purifiers, especially in high-risk areas, may mitigate nosocomial transmission, including among staff. Air sampling can provide an early warning of an outbreak and help identify areas that need enhanced infection control.”
