I’m sitting here listening to different versions of the jazz classic Giant Steps by John Coltrane. So far none of them come close to the original. I like the Courtney Pine version and even the Kenny Garrett rendition, but for some reason that original take from the titular album is a masterpiece. I'm revisiting the 1990s today. I played these two albums *a lot* back then. The days of samples and hip-hop. Pine won a Music of Black Origin Award for best jazz act for the 'Jazz Stories' album.
