  1. The Beacon Through the Gorse

I got down low in the gorse to photograph the Baltimore Beacon, so most of the frame is flowers and wire rather than the beacon itself. A few groups came and went as I photographed the Beacon, but I don’t think any of them stooped down low and pu...

  6. Drifting past the pier

Two jellyfish drifted past the end of the pier at Ballycotton, less than a metre under the surface but in the warm light of a setting sun the water grew dark quickly with depth.

  8. Last Light at Ballycotton

The three of them had the pier to themselves, rods out over water that had gone completely flat. I was there with Blarney Photography Club, and sunset is always an attraction there. It had already happened somewhere behind the headland, leaving a band of yellow along the horizon and nothing else lit. Not one of them turned to look at it. They watched the water instead, which is important if you have come to catch something.

  9. A Song Thrush at Dusk

The thrush was sitting on a branch in a cherry tree in the grounds of Blarney Castle late in the evening, and it stayed put long enough for a few frames. The next photo is a blur as the bird looked the other way, and the following photo is...

  11. The Last Days of the Loretto Extension

The ugly monstrosity that was an extension to the Loretto School in Youghal, in 2023. It was finally demolished in January this year.

  12. Evening Sails at Kinsale

A grey evening in Kinsale, with a fleet of small boats out on the harbour for what looked like club racing. Most of them carried red sails, Squibs I think, a class Kinsale Yacht Club is well known for, with a few white ones mixed in. The water was almost flat, and the crews sat low and quiet as they worked their way across it. Behind them, the wooded shoreline climbed up to fields and houses on the hill, and a single dark-hulled yacht sat moored off to the side, sails down for the night.

  14. The Boats of Ballycotton

Ballycotton harbour late on a summer evening is one of those places that is rewarding to visit. The working boats had all come in, Atlantic Chief, Excelsior and Prolific were rafted tight against the wall, hulls bobbing in calm waters. The...

  16. Roses for Sale, Bantry Market

The roses lean out of their black plastic pots like they’re craning for a better view of the customer, and she’s giving them a proper once-over, but what I noticed was the tote bag so floral it could be for sale at the flower stall....

  20. "I see nothing but hills, ridges and sea": a breathtaking five-day walk around Ireland’s south-westernmost headland

The creators of County Cork’s Sheep’s Head Way had to win over hundreds of landowners to complete the ambitious project, but the result is a gloriously unspoilt trail

  22. Dawn Sentinel at Gougane Barra

A bunch of us arrived in Gougane Barra this morning to photograph the sunrise, only to be met with driving rain and mist and fog on the hills. A biting wind tore through clothes making for a missed opportunity for all of us.

Luckily, within a few minutes of arriving, a glow could be seen on the horizon, and the rain started to thin out. In another 10 minutes the sky was almost completely clear, as if nothing had happened!

Ironically, I would have liked some high cloud for the sun to bounce off before it rose, but it wasn’t to be so I decided on a silhouette of the tree near the oratory instead. That would fill in the sky nicely.
