  2. Can't believe this just took me an afternoon and works so well, instead of becoming another multi-month/year side-project. :neobot_baa:

(Probably because I just copied together a bunch of stuff and didn't let my perfectionism get in the way.)

  9. If anyone's looking for a good #CouchCoOp game to play over Christmas, I'd recommend Research and Destroy. I feel bad for this game because it got a lot of one-star reviews on the Xbox store after it went on Game Pass, and they were all some variant of 'this game is not identical to this other game I like and therefore sucks'. We played it through completely four times before it was removed.

It does take a bit of getting used to. It's a combination of turn-based and FPS mechanics. You get a turn with three characters (you can switch between them at will) and they each can elapse a fixed amount of time per turn. Time elapses only when you're aiming or moving, not when you're just looking (lots of people complained about time elapsing while aiming, but it would be far too easy to snipe if aiming didn't elapse time).

The game has nine weapons and they all have different advantages. There's no 'best' weapon and you start with a random set of three, so two different runs can be very different. You can unlock the others and you can upgrade each of the firing modes in different ways, which alters the play style a lot.

The enemies are also varied. Ghosts can move through walls (and, if you hit them with an explosive, can be pushed into walls where they're hard to shoot). The Boogeyman targets a single character and can be seen only by that character, but can be damaged only by other characters, so you need some team work. The Vampire Assassin creeps close and then teleports away after striking, but can be heard giggling if you're close (which helps to find her - she's not invisible, but she does hide behind things). And so on. Each new creature needs different tactics, so there's a lot of variety.

No affiliate links, I'm not related to the company that made the game in any way, I just really enjoyed it and was sad that it got so many bad reviews for daring to be creative.

  11. December 21, 2023 - Day 355 - NewPlay Bonus Review
    Total NewPlays: 377

    Game: Heave Ho

    Platform: Steam
    Release Date: Aug 29, 2019
    Installation Date: Dec 21, 2023
    Unplayed: 0d
    Playtime: 27m

Heave Ho is a 2D platformer, primarily designed for couch co-op play, but that does have a solo campaign.

However, just calling it a "2D platformer" would be like calling Forza Horizon 4 a "car game", or calling Dredge a "fishing game".

Nothing prepared me for the sheer hilarity of trying to play this game; at some points I was sitting doubled over laughing, yelling at the screen for how ridiculous the game is.

Primarily, you play as a head with two arms attached to the side. Use the left stick to swing both arms (yes, that sounds counter-intuitive, but it makes sense when you play), and use the left and right triggers to grip surfaces with either your left or right hands (or both!).

Whichever hand is gripping a surface then becomes an anchor point to wildly flail your other arm and headbody around in a desperate attempt to try and grip another surface, as you try and navigate across the platforms to the goal point.

This was another game from my unused keys list, but as my eldest already had it installed in his library, I installed using family sharing instead of my key, in case I hated it.

Six minutes later I quit the game and redeemed my own key, because Heave Ho is hilariously:

    5: Excellent

    -schaufel bzw. Korb bzw Gabel

    Still in Love! ❤️

  17. #BaldursGate3 #ps5 #couchcoop
    🥰😍❤️

  18. It's shader time! I modified some shaders to have some movement and added particle effects.
