Efficiency, productivity, elegance, most for least, are the real issues; contrasting US & Chinese developments: “The AI race everyone's watching is about which model is best. The race that actually matters is about who can keep the lights on.”

A few highlights (didn’t read to end but I’m captivated by the notion of ‘purchasing intelligence by the syllable’): “… Microsoft, which has invested approximately $13 billion in OpenAI and writes up to 30 percent of its own code with generative AI, instructed engineers in a major division to stop using an AI coding assistant because the bills became untenable. One unnamed company, per Axios, ran up a $500 million Claude bill in a single month after management forgot to set a usage cap. These are structural miscalculations about what intelligence costs when you purchase it by the syllable.

“Bryan Catanzaro, Nvidia's vice president of applied deep learning, put it bluntly: the cost of compute for his team now far exceeds what the company spends on the employees using it. The company that manufactures the hardware powering the AI revolution acknowledges that the technology is more expensive than the people it was supposed to augment.””

Says everything about (or describes) the inefficiency of the tool & the wealth of certain parts of the world. Also perhaps absence of (or breakdown in) cost-benefit analysis or perhaps - more widely - values.

  8. CW: Hanson Speech — Australia as a country with judeo christian values

    @DarkMatterZine

    Maybe.
There is a belief - can’t remember where I first read it - that Hanson appeals to feelings not any factual positions or understanding.

What does it benefit us to have a party of grievance seeking govt? Or perhaps: Are there any benefits? What are the costs? It’s certainly a hard one to push back on or push past. People get very mulish about their feelings-based decisions. (One thing we’ve surely learned from watching the trajectory of Trump in the US.)

You do what you must do, and pay for it. So in the end all things are simple.

  14. RE: mastodon.social/@bencurthoys/1

Yes, well said. It’s long past time for standard accounting practices to modernise by incorporating externalities as part of costs to be assessed against benefits. 🙏🏻
Whatever happened to the project to push that integration along? It was all the go & being talked about (along with triple bottom line accounting) back in ?2006 & even before that I think (initiated by the IMF or some other global economics player)… 🤔
So much outstanding work needs to be done to “standard” accounting practices.

  19. A review of developmental psychology and behavioral literature supports a conclusion that people regard effort as a cost, and do not avoid that cost when the reward makes it worthwhile.

  23. A quotation from Terry Pratchett

And Sergeant Colon once again knew a secret about bravery. It was arguably a kind of enhanced cowardice — the knowledge that while death may await you if you advance it will be a picnic compared to the certain living hell that awaits should you retreat.

  27. A quotation from Abraham Lincoln

The advice of a father to his son “Beware of entrance to a quarrel, but being in, bear it that the opposed may beware of thee,” is good, and yet not the best. Quarrel not at all. No man resolved to make the most of himself can spare time for personal contention. Still less can he afford to take all the consequences, including the vitiating of his temper and loss of self control. Yield larger things to which you can show no more than equal right; and yield lesser ones, though clearly your own. Better give your path to a dog than be bitten by him in contesting for the right. Even killing the dog would not cure the bite.

Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) American lawyer, politician, US President (1861-65)
    Letter (1863-10-26) to J. M. Cutts
