Wars have a major effect on the Climate. The carbon emissions are enormous and need to be included in climate targets per the Paris Agreement.

750 bases militares en 80 países custodian el país más endeudado del mundo
Crecimiento de la deuda pública de USA en relación con la producción de riqueza (PIB) (Gráfico: Estrategias de Inversión)Estados Unidos es el país con la economía más grande del mundo, con 25.000 millones de dólares de Producto Interior Bruto (PIB), según datos de enero de 2024, pero también con la deuda pública mayor: más de 34.700 millones, lo que equivale al 124 por ciento del PIB y supone un pago de intereses de 1.000 millones cada 100 días. Esta realidad determina en buena medida muchas de las iniciativas anunciadas por el nuevo presidente, Donald Trump, ya que para sostener una deuda así es necesario una economía fuerte, con un mercado interno dinámico y que las exportaciones superen a las importaciones; de ahí el énfasis de Trump en el proteccionismo y la subida de aranceles a los productos importados desde terceros países.
A finales de 2024, la deuda norteamericana ascendía a unos 36.000 millones de dólares (un 130% del PIB), a lo que hay que añadir un pago de intereses cercano a los 2.000 millones anuales que reciben inversores de todo el mundo. Para sostener esta situación Estados Unidos se ha valido en todo momento de su condición de primera potencia militar mundial y mayor exportador de armas. «El remedio, hasta ahora, ha sido inundar el mundo de dólares y acoplar ambas ambiciones, imperio y consumo indefinido. Imprimir billetes, o crearlos digitalmente apretando el return del teclado en el Tesoro y la Reserva Federal (FED), con la seguridad de que a socios y rivales no les quedará más remedio que atesorarlos. El dólar y la hegemonía militar son dos vasos comunicantes del mismo mecanismo que gobierna el mundo y su economía», dice Manel Pérez, adjunto al director del periódico La Vanguardia.
Mapa: La VanguardiaSegún el Financial Times, asesores de Trump han transmitido a los estados socios de la OTAN el objetivo de dedicar hasta el 5% de su PIB a gastos militares (obviamente, compras a la industria armamentística norteamericana), un objetivo muy superior al 2% que Trump ya fijó en su primer mandato. Por si la guerra de Ucrania y la de Gaza no fueran suficientes alicientes para armarse, Trump ha insinuado una actitud agresiva hacia países vecinos como Panamá, Canadá, México o Groenlandia (que pertenece al socio atlántico Dinamarca).
Ahora Trump busca una solución de paz para Ucrania porque el objetivo ya ha sido alcanzado: obligar a Europa a comprar armas y suministros energéticos a USA durante bastantes años
Otra de las fuentes de ingresos de Estados Unidos es el sector energético, muy favorecido por la guerra de Ucrania al cortar los suministros de gas natural ruso a Alemania y otros países europeos, y sustituirlos por gas licuado (GLP) estadounidense importado el doble o el triple de caro. Ahora Trump busca una solución de paz para Ucrania porque el objetivo ya ha sido alcanzado: obligar a Europa a comprar armas y suministros energéticos a USA durante bastantes años, ya que la Unión Europea tardará más de una década en normalizar sus relaciones diplomáticas y económicas con Rusia.
Gráfico: La VanguardiaY otro de los grandes intereses norteamericanos por el que Trump velará son las grandes empresas tecnológicas, porque juegan un importante papel en el plano mediático, conformando conciencias a través del control de las plataformas de redes sociales, y también en el plano militar, ya que tanto los satélites como los chips son indispensables para guiar misiles y toda clase de armamento. En este capítulo, Trump presionará a la UE para que mejore las cuentas de resultados de las grandes tecnológicas (Google, Meta, Uber, X, etcétera) suprimiendo o suavizando la regulación relacionada con la verificación de contenidos y la privacidad de los usuarios.
Volviendo al plano militar, Trump tiene bajo su mando el mayor ejército del mundo, que cuenta con cerca de 750 bases e instalaciones militares repartidas por 80 países, según el proyecto Cost of War de la universidad de Brown (Rhode Island, USA). Este despliegue le permitió a George W. Bush declarar «la guerra contra el terror» tras los atentados yihadistas del 11 de septiembre de 2001. Desde entonces, el ejército norteamericano ha movilizado a 2,7 millones de soldados y combatido en 22 países, según un reportaje especial de La Vanguardia publicado este 19 de enero.
