Some things come to an end. CosmicNation has decided not to continue with the Session Open Communities. After over a year of testing we concluded with that for privacy, Session is a remarkable messenger but the developers show no sign of being interested in separating illegal activity from legal activity. We saw more and more disgusting spam hitting our communities on Session. We don't want to be associated with such content nor such a messenger.

It has been an interesting weekend with mastodon spam management. In all I think this was a positive thing for the Fediverse. Some instance admins got reminded that they had an instance. And we also learned that there are A LOT of abandoned instances out there with their door wide open for registration without any approval. I'll release a list over the abandoned instances we discovered in the coming days, so other admins can benefit from it.
Due to the resend spam surge across Mastodon instances I'm temporarily limiting certain CosmicNation users from making posts. These are users that have joined our free trial less than a month ago and have shown no sign of activity. These users will receive an email that they have to reply to before we open up their account again. Our apologies for the inconvenience, however, we have a paid mastodon service and therefore a name and reputation to uphold.
As suspected. The spam is coming from instances where their irresponsible owner/admin isn't an active user anymore. Basically abandoned instances, that just let their door wide open for free registrations without approval. Some of our Mastodon users are receiving spam today. I'm doing analyzes while suspending the reported accounts. Of course, this spam is coming from instances allowing users to create free accounts and without an approval process. It's just the way it is. If the instance is insignificant we defederate from the instance.
