Clearly the #CorruptSCOTUS did not heed this part of the Declaration of Independence when deciding voting cases:

"That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed."

If they did, companies and PACs couldn't spend unlimited funds. Districts couldn't be gerrymandered for partisan reasons. And voter suppression rules would be unconstitutional.

  6. @newrepublic

I'm beginning to think Justice Roberts will be forced out shortly after the midterms. He's just not consistently loyal enough to Trump.

His reward for destroying the VRA, Roe and campaign finance limits? Being shunned and outcast.

Ever thus to those in the face-eating leopard party.

Don't forget the #CorruptSCOTUS the GOP and Federalist Society has spent decades building.

    These all work together.

  12. @heidilifeldman

All this, two and a half months before a federal election.

The timeline alone should be reason to suspend any new restrictions on voting.

    But... #ThisIsAmericaNow with a #CorruptSCOTUS and #AmericanClownEmperor

  13. @gimulnautti

You'd think so, but no, the US Constitution and its amendments say nothing about the right of citizens to vote.

In fact, it only says that states set the rules for elections. Of course, various states have set very restrictive rules over the ages.

Recognising the problem, Congress passed the Voting Rights Act in 1964. But 60 years of attacks and a #CorruptSCOTUS have undone that.

So here we are, racing to destroy the foundation of democracy.

  14. @IAmDannyBoling

And 2024 wasn't a high watermark for free elections either.

Many (mostly red) states were gerrymandering, closing polling places, restricting drop boxes, purging registration rolls, encouraging absurd disputes, adding voter ID restrictions and more.

And, of course, the #CorruptSCOTUS had already gotten quite far in crushing the Voting Right Act.

  15. @martinvermeer @newsguyusa

Are you arguing that this #CorruptSCOTUS has some firm principles and doesn't just pursue raw power for their associates?

    I'm afraid, I disagree

  16. @martinvermeer @newsguyusa

Don't be so sure of that with this #CorruptSCOTUS

I mean, birthright citizenship barely survived.

  17. @BrianJopek

#Biden didn't just inherit an economy in tatters, but also:

    - a raging pandemic with no plan to rollout the vaccine
    - a severely understaffed military in Afghanistan with a deadline to pull out and half the country already overrun by the Taliban
    - a #CorruptSCOTUS and hundreds of dodgy Trump judges
    - a decimated Dept of Justice and Dept of State
    - zero handover from the prior admin

  18. @momentstoremember

If Dems retake the Senate, you can be sure the GOP will jam through two replacement SCOTUS justices on the way out.

The top priority of Senate Republicans for decades has been to build the #CorruptSCOTUS

    #ThisIsAmericaNow

  19. @PhilipCJames

The US Constitution already lays out the order of succession.

Whereas SC law allows a temporary appointee until the next election.

Of course, Trump, MAGA and the #CorruptSCOTUS have shown little respect for the Constitution, so who know what will happen.

  20. @lauren

Of course, the Supreme Court only takes cases when they've come up though the federal courts - not when the POTUS asks them.

Of course, with this #CorruptSCOTUS anything can happen

  21. @cdarwin

"Originalism" is an absurd theory for constitutional law.

"Intent" is inherently impossible to divine when legal text is the result of a group effort.

It gives a blank cheque to the judge to cherrypick their data points in explaining their take on "intent". Worse, it quite literally abandons the cause of "justice" in favour of adherence to this selected view of "intent".
    #CorruptSCOTUS

  22. Virtually no citizens want this

Who do the #CorruptSCOTUS and these Republican states work for?

  23. @gottalaff.bsky.social

    To recap:

America kept a 150 year old constitutional right and Trump still owes a $5m jury penalty

...meanwhile Trump can take direct command of "independent agencies" (exc The Fed), states can discriminate against trans people and corporations/the wealth can openly buy elections now.

    Yeah...democracy is in great shape.

    #CorruptSCOTUS

  24. Deleting above message as #CorruptSCOTUS (shockingly) upheld a right spelled out clearly in a constitutional amendment despite pressure from the #AmericanClownEmperor

  25. @gottalaff.bsky.social

I full expect Trump wants to force out Thomas and Roberts to put in his own lackeys. If one/both stand down, expect McConnell to jam in replacements in Dec.

And who would he appoint? Blanche, almost certainly. Ivanka, maybe?

    #CorruptSCOTUS

  26. The #CorruptSCOTUS failed to rule on birthright citizenship...choosing to delay this no brainer until the last possible minute. Not a good sign.

And now they gave Trump bad news on E Jean Carroll's $5m verdict. IMO, they would only do that to help deflect criticism when doing something really big that Trump wants.

I'm very worried for birthright citizenship ...on any of the Civil War amendments.

  27. #Mainers in kayaks protest Chief Justice #JohnRoberts near his island home

    by Stephen Betts, Midcoast Villager
    July 19, 2025

"#Kayakers who say they oppose the direction the U.S. Supreme Court has taken the country took to the water Saturday morning to protest near the seasonal home of Chief Justice John Roberts Jr.

"The flotilla launched its kayaks from the new public landing in Port Clyde and paddled a few hundred yards to Roberts’ home on Hupper Island.

"The chief justice and his wife Jane Roberts purchased the home in June 2006. He typically spends time at the seasonal home after the high court recesses for the summer. Their chief residence is in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
Signs voicing opposition to the #SupremeCourt’s rulings were brought in the kayaks, and others lined the waterfront.

"Signs referred to rulings that they said harm the #LBTQ community, the overturning of campaign spending limits for #corporations in the #CitizensUnited case in 2010, the overturning of a woman’s right to #abortion in 2022, and more recent rulings that grant the president immunity from actions taken while president.

"Organizer Susan MacNeil-Densmore said earlier this week she is affiliated with the organization #AudacityCAT (#CreativeActionTogether) which has been active locally working to resist #authoritarianism, but said the event was not really part of any specific organization."
