It’s quiet in the morning. I can hear myself think. I mean that literally — I can actually hear the voice in my head, and I bet you can too. Not my voice, of course, but your own.
I’ve never really stopped to examine it. That inner monologue has just always been there, running in the background. It’s tied to the same part of the brain that handles speech, which explains why the thoughts we “hear” in our heads sound like us.
It’s strange and fascinating that we can think something silently and then speak it out loud almost exactly the way it sounded internally. Although, to be fair, some people seem to let the voice part happen before the thinking part.
What’s even more interesting is that we can take that inner voice and transmit it through our hands — turning thoughts into written words, making the voice in our heads appear visually. Most people can do that without much effort.
But there are people who still have an inner monologue yet, because of their biology, can’t connect it to speech or writing. That must be more than frustrating — like being trapped inside with no reliable way to communicate outward.
I know I’m in way over my head with this subject. Did you know there’s a cord that connects the two halves of our brain? It’s called the corpus callosum. When it’s severed, the two halves no longer communicate, so literally the right hand doesn’t know what the left is doing — sort of. Each eye, for example, sends information to a different hemisphere, so if you cover one eye, the functions controlled by the other side of the brain don’t know what’s going on.

#ciekawostka: Tak naprawdę mamy „dwa mózgi”
Osobom z bardzo ciężkimi przypadkami padaczki, czasem przecina się corpus callosum, czyli ciało modzelowate, które łączy dwie półkule mózgu. Odpowiada ono m.in. przesyłaniu informacji z jednej półkuli mózgu.
Skutek takiego przecięcia jest interesujący, bowiem mamy dwa mózgi, które myślą samodzielnie, w jednym ciele. Pamiętajmy również, że za każdą stronę naszego ciała, odpowiada inna półkula, co czasem skutkuje ciekawymi sytuacjami, gdzie człowiek nie może się dogadać sam ze sobą.

We tested two patients with callosotomy using verbal dichotic listening (DL). We found the expected left-ear extinction, which could not be overcome by selective attention to the left ear. Attended or not, accessing the left ear information in DL requires an intact #CorpusCallosum. @biorxivpreprint in this study, we explore #handedness -related difference in #CorpusCallosum morphology in #HCP data. As follow-up of a recent ("negative") meta-analysis we systematically explore some remaining questions such as the effect of various definitions of handedness. In short: handedness differences are likely negligible. Thus, the frequent notion that mixed- or left-handers have stronger interhemispheric connectivity, might be just one of these 1970/80s #HandednessMyths .
