## Apologia for Seven West Media’s Past Offences: An ABC Puff Piece?
So, what is this? A belated *apologia* for the *Stokes* family and #SevenWestMedia management past misbehaviour? **We was bad but we got better** ? I have to say this #ABC article leaves me nonplussed as to its *raison d’être*.
We’ve known for decades our main stream news outlets are hotbeds of the worst kind of management practices, #Monied and #Rentier propaganda machines, and ultimately responsible for the appalling quality of journalism in Australia. We also know that successive govt(s) have done bugger all to mitigate the worst behaviours of the fourth estate (Why?)
What was Manning’s purpose when he wrote this?

I’m Good For Nothing.
I think my ability to deal with life's curve balls comes from doing nothing. These are moments of inactivity, hours of them sometimes, spent having minimal thought and movement. I day dream, build conversations that don't happen, sing for myself or even spend hours staring at the wall. I don't think humans are built for modern productivity where you have to be doing something all the time chasing metrics. When you ask an average guy what he considers time well spent, he'd give you vague […]https://ridiculousbharath.wordpress.com/2026/10/07/im-good-for-nothing/

As a feminist, I really messed up today!
Today was yet another meeting that could just as easily have been an email (or, at best, a strongly worded letter). Yes, the company is dealing with a disproportionately high number of layoffs. So the topic was: improving customer satisfaction (but without having to pay for it). Anyway… What’s really upsetting me—unfortunately only in hindsight—is that the CEO kept drawing comparisons: “Getting laid off is the same as cheating.” The image of a good company was also consistently defined this way: “If you don’t want your wife to cheat on you, you have to be the best husband.” And this anecdote was brought up repeatedly—almost to the point of overuse.
Unfortunately, many ideas didn’t occur to me until long after I’d had time to think about it:
- How awful (and embarrassing) life must be if that’s the measure of all things.
- The exaggerated assumption of “what a woman expects” so she’ll stay with you (because otherwise you’re completely screwed)
- But most importantly: Have you, you stupid motherfucker, ever asked any woman—other than the one who gave birth to you or who you’re financially dependent on today—what she thinks about this?Unfortunately, all these thoughts occurred to me far too late in response to the question, “Imagine our customers are your wives....”

The Gold Watch
By Cliff Potts, CSO, and Editor-in-Chief of WPS News
Baybay City, Leyte, Philippines — August 23, 2026
When I retired, I bought myself a gold watch.
Not because I was honored. Because I wasn’t.
I worked for GoDaddy from 2017 to 2021. That is not a lifetime, but in the modern American workplace, especially on the retail front lines, it does not have to be. A few years is enough to understand how the system is structured. Do the work. Meet the metrics. Keep the operation moving. And when it ends, it ends without ceremony.
GoDaddy presented itself as something more than it was. The role I accepted was described as customer service combined with sales, and part of the reason I took the position was to develop sales experience. In practice, especially on the shift I worked, roughly 4 p.m. to midnight, the job was retail. Pure retail. Customer-facing, volume-driven, and built around people with billion-dollar dreams and Coca-Cola budgets.
About a month after we began working on the floor, our team was placed into a pilot program. We were given an additional two dollars an hour, which effectively replaced whatever sales upside we might have developed. At the same time, the role shifted. We became a Tier 1 technical support team, and the calls routed into our queue reflected that change. The job we had been hired to do was no longer the job we were doing.
The structure around that work did not hold. We were told that we would meet regularly with a team lead to improve performance and develop skills. In my experience, that did not happen. When calls came in that exceeded what we could handle, we were expected to resolve them without meaningful support. Escalation was discouraged, and guidance was limited. At the same time, we were still evaluated on performance metrics that assumed training and coaching were taking place.
That contradiction defined the job. Responsibility remained with the worker, even when the support system described by the company did not materialize in practice.
Initial HBA (Home Based Agent) installation in April 2020.During the COVID period, the gap between the job as described and the job as lived became even more visible. I was living in a two-bedroom apartment with a roommate. There was no office, no workspace designed for what the job required. I built one anyway. My initial setup was two television trays and a folding metal chair supporting a dual-monitor system and a phone connection that had to be hardwired into the internet.
It was not unusual. One agent I knew worked out of a closet because it was the only space available in her apartment to set up a desk. That was the level of adaptation required. The system did not adjust to the worker. The worker was expected to adjust to the system.
Eventually I acquired a basic desk, and the company provided a chair from the call center. The underlying structure, however, did not change.
The leadership structure did not hold either. My supervisor eventually left the company. The official explanation was that he had moved on to other opportunities. I have my own views on that, but it is enough to say that the structure changed. I was invited to stay, but by that point the pattern was clear. This was the second time in my career that a direct manager left under unclear circumstances, and shortly afterward, I left as well.
Companies like GoDaddy did not create this system, but they operate within it and reinforce it. The modern retail and call-center model has been built over decades to prioritize efficiency, metrics, and throughput. The individual worker is expected to adapt to that structure, not the other way around. Recognition, continuity, and closure are not built into the design.
I know someone from the Occupy days who likes to point out that I worked for “big companies.”
Life Fitness. AT&T. Toyota Financial Services. GoDaddy.
As if that means something.
It doesn’t.
The size of the company never translated into stability, recognition, or long-term security. It didn’t protect the worker. It didn’t change the structure. It didn’t guarantee anything except that the system would keep running exactly as designed.
By the time I worked there, the outcome was already defined. Do the work. Meet the metrics. And when it ends, it ends.
So I bought my own gold watch.
Not a real one. A cheap golden pocket watch from Amazon. About forty dollars. It was the kind of gesture a company used to make when a man’s years had been worth marking. In my case, I had to make it for myself.
And then that watch was eventually stolen.
That, too, feels appropriate to the era. Even the small act of recognition had to be self-funded, and even that did not last.
Because that was still more recognition than the job was ever going to give me.
The time existed whether it was recognized or not.
So I marked it myself.

✮ Doors and Us ✮
“Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together.” — Vincent van Gogh
His world begins with a mop.
The frayed and loose strings of the mop head that washes the floor, scuffed with the day’s elements and stained with indifference by the feet that walk on them. The surface looks clean again, and the love that beams from them is an understatement. For the rest who walk through those halls, they would never notice, even as they see their reflection on the polished surface. People may cast their eyes on the art hanging on the walls, but not on the floor. Who does? Who cares? Someone is pocketing change to do the dirty job. His skin might as well be made of glass. Nobody sees him, the person wearing overalls behind a yellow sign. Unless, of course, his services are required. Someone spilled something in the pantry. What is his name again?
Even so, he didn’t grumble. Didn’t flip off the pesky person behind her back. Didn’t mock her for the way she talks. He simply said, “I’ll be with you shortly.” He loved the opportunity. Somewhere in the past, people didn’t look him in the eye. His name was preceded by a title. A title that meant nothing here. He neither folded nor bent. Neither griped about the luminous appeal of the title he didn’t have. He was often heard saying, “How can one be expected to be blessed with such big responsibilities if one cannot be entrusted with a modest task, though unworthy of one’s skill, and not do it very well?” Quotable. Grade A philosophy. It made sense.
One day, he left. Thanked everyone. Not one dry eye in the room. Years later, he popped in to say hi. He held the firmest handshakes. His eyes in sync with his classic smile. He walked the hall every morning. Feet shod in Derby, brogue, or Oxford daintily slapping the floor. Heads would sometimes turn his way when he stopped, dug in his pocket, and wiped off something on the floor. Now, why would the CFO do that? He shrugged. “Creature of habit,” he remarked.
So when the new guy, who kept leaving the trash behind the door for the morning shift to deal with, told everyone that the man above couldn’t relate to him, laughter ensued.
If a door is offered, big or small, take it. Be grateful, and you will never feel empty.
Whether it’s ego or shame, people pass up the chance that comes from humble beginnings. God often leaves doors of opportunity half our size, and most of the time, people fail to recognize them because they are unwilling to bend and squirm their way through. It is only by being grateful that we can walk through these doors or windows, and we cannot expect them to warp themselves to fit us. It’s a matter of adjustment and spirit. If by humility we will be led into a better tomorrow, then crawl through if we must. Fortune favors the bold, and the boldest course of action is to have the courage to be humble enough to learn what we don’t fully understand.
You see opportunity in pleasing people, but pleasing people will get you nowhere. No matter how hard you try. Of the thousand good things you have done, some people— especially the entitled ones—will perceive them as your obligation to them and nothing more. Sadly, when your usefulness has run its course, they will see you as incompetent. Instead, be just and be the best of who you are.
Opportunities are only valid when people are impressed, wrong! The minute you stop impressing people is the moment you set yourself free. Many of us believe that we are what we wear, or at least we try. It’s not what we wear that gives us personality; it’s our character that defines who we are, no matter what we wear. Stripped bare, are you no longer who you are? The true meaning of value lies in who we are.
Surprise and impress yourself with something new every day. Poke it with a deep sense of wonder and curiosity until a new school of thought and an array of new talents burst inside you. You see, even doors can be walls that keep people out. It’s not that they don’t have the key. It’s not that they don’t have what it takes. But some are passive. Their door isn’t glossy enough for them. Yet, when it comes to doors that waste their time, they would gladly pay to get through them.
Leave your ego at the doorstep, and when you do, you get to learn something. That’s what usually gets in the way of people; many of us are too good to be modest. An example of this is when people get laid off. A number will never cease to complain and will eventually bury themselves in the grief of what was.
Sometimes, all it takes is to take little steps and try to run again.
Transpose! Don’t stagnate believing that you will always be invincible. If the magic is no longer there, there is no sense in dwelling on the past long gone. Avenues are waiting to be explored, only if you are willing to lose sight of the past, so that they become material.
Our lives are littered with doors that often lead to new adventures and, with such, challenges. Some keys are not meant to be in your hands; sometimes, the only key that unlocks doors leading to your destiny is you.

Consider using this for internal #emails in case your external mails are under embargo. If you are somehow not allowed to do it anywhere, consider changing jobs 😉 .
