  1. #ESA:
    "
    Proba-3’s Coronagraph is alive!
    "
"A month after an anomaly onboard the Proba-3 mission caused ground control to lose contact .. the mission team shares great news: the spacecraft has phoned home, re-establishing the lost connection."

"The Coronagraph is now in safe mode and stable, .."

    "What happened to the Coronagraph?"

    Yeah!

  2. Had the opportunity to visit a most fascinating solar #observatory Thursday in #Switzerland near #Arosa, the Astrophysikalisches Observatorium #Tschuggen (AOT) which #MaxWaldmeier had built in 1939, which was abandoned in 1980 and which amateur astronomers are now bringing back to the state just at that time: Here are the original Kern #coronagraph and another one from #Zeiss (with a huge spectrograph) it's sitting on. See facebook.com/media/set/?vanity for a picture album, with links to the background in the first comment.

  3. Two European satellites mimic a total solar eclipse as scientists aim to study its corona.

The satellites have created the first artificial solar eclipse by flying in precise formation, providing hours of on-demand totality for scientists.

Dubbed Proba-3, the €181 million mission has generated 10 successful solar eclipses so far.

ESA released the eclipse pictures at the Paris Air Show on Monday.

  4. Experimental demonstration of a quantum-optimal coronagraph using spatial mode sorters: opg.optica.org/optica/fulltext -> Turning down starlight to spot new exoplanets: optica.org/about/newsroom/news - new #coronagraph could reveal hidden planets beyond our solar system.

  5. Yay, 'live' images from the new solar #coronagraph CCOR-1 are finally available on testbed.spaceweather.gov/produ though it is still not operational! Can we have another bright small-elongation comet now, please? ;-)

  6. How the new #coronagraph #CCOR-1 on a weather satellite saw #comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS: the view on 8 October at 21:45 UTC, grabbed from the new video youtube.com/watch?v=QrzOKAxu1j - the images themselves (more are seen on a computer screen later in the video) don't seem to be available directly yet.

  7. This is how the new #coronagraph CCOR-1 on the weather satellite GOES-19 sees the solar corona: nesdis.noaa.gov/news/noaa-shar - the first ever coronagraph designed for "operations" (versus "science"). See also x.com/USNRL/status/18487538080 for an animation with different processing!

  8. Enjoy Totality Every Day With This Personal Eclipse Generator - There have been a couple of high-profile solar eclipses lately, but like us, you p... - hackaday.com/2024/06/27/enjoy- #arduinohacks #coronagraph #homehacks #arduino #eclipse #gantry #window #blind #shade #moon #sun #x-y

  9. On #Webb a new #NIRCam capability that allows for simultaneous #coronagraph imaging in both the short and long wavelength channels is now available to the scientific community: stsci.edu/contents/news/jwst/2 - this new mode was commissioned in June 2023 and shows overall excellent performance, both in collecting the data and in the end-to-end pipeline products.

  10. I've been following this #ESA mission since 14 (!) years when 'around 2012' was the projected launch date (see skyweek.wordpress.com/2009/07/ for what I wrote in 2009) ... and now the two spacecraft making up the #Proba3 mission are actually finished and should launch in 2024: esa.int/Enabling_Support/Space - they'll fly in formation forming a huge solar #coronagraph with one being the occulter and the other observing the #corona of the #Sun.
