There are ways to get quality #editing on a minimal budget. You just have to be willing to put in the time and effort, and think outside the box. One such way is to use your other skills as a form of payment. Bring back bartering! (Serious, peeps. I don't know who needs to hear this, but “ibid.” is an abbreviation of “ibidem” and requires a period. Treat it similarly to “etc.”:

As a copyeditor, I've learned that most of my clients have words, and punctuation marks that they love to use. One of my jobs is to replace some of these instances to vary the rhythm and flow of the sentences, which helps make the text read smoother.
But then I got used to working with one writer who, for example, liked semicolons. This means that when my next writer prefers em dashes, I have to recaliberate my suggested revisions; semicolons are now back on the menu!

Finished copy-editing a nonfiction book about a feminist campaign in Irish academia; now I'm editing a novel with a linguistic theme and a report on rewilding with wolves in Europe.
I love the variety in this work, the worlds of research and imagination that I get to spend time in and help present to readers. #editing #copyeditor #proofreading #work

Body parts function in specific ways, and you can assume your readers know how the body works – hands clap, feet (or legs) kick, shoulders shrug, and so on. You can't nod with your hands, you can't kick with your arms.
With that in mind, 'He rose to his feet, the note in his hands' would be better as 'He stood, clutching the note'.

I have a new editing mug. ☺️
It's a late Christmas gift from my supportive parents, who bought it without understanding it.
I've included an explanation in the photo's alt text. In short: The symbols on this mug support using spaced periods for ellipses. This follows The Chicago Manual of Style, which makes me happy.
(I'm perfectly fine with unspaced periods for ellipses in social media posts. But in books? Nonbreaking spaces, please.)

When I was first starting out as a copyeditor around 7 years ago, I realized that I had a legitimate need for red marking pencils. For whatever reason, it seemed to me like only teachers and professors should be able to buy them, so I felt slightly rebellious purchasing my first pack.

@dmandl I like your wording better. Even given the writer’s probable influences you suggested, I can’t help that “squatting on” connotes “shitting on” (or “poised to shit on”) to me—which IS a lot of what goes on in Internet culture, ja? Btw, are you a #copyeditor too? 👋🏻
