  1. #Beavers breathe new life into Dorset as dams built, #biodiversity returns

Providing end-of-year report, the #NationalTrust project, said it's thrilled beavers were reshaping their home in #Dorset; they felled #trees to construct a 35m #dam, slowing flow of a stream & creating a deep, #wildlife-rich pool

#Coppicing trees allowed more light in & improved #habitats for #plants, #insects, #amphibians, #birds, #bats; may stop flooding on nearby road

  2. The challenge remains: the growing deer population threatens young tree shoots, revealing a delicate balance in forest management.

Yet the benefits of maintaining this ancient practice continue to shine through.

  3. @natureworks "a range of blended services (#agroforestry, education, #coppicing, tourism, burial ground, orchard etc) that support sustainable #livelihoods whilst simultaneously increasing #biodiversity."
Yum, yum. You're talking my language.
Got stuff you might want to have published in the US, Pc Design Mag, perhaps? Do you know Maddy Harland, editor at Pc Mag? She'd publish your stuff, too, if she hasn't already.

  4. Coppicing (Habitat 🌄)

Coppicing is the traditional method in woodland management of cutting down a tree to a stump, which in many species encourages new shoots to grow from the stump or roots, thus ultimately regrowing the tree. A forest or grove that has been subject to coppicing is called a copse or coppice, in which young tree stems are repeatedly cut down to n...

  5. @BardfromtheBookshop so, of these, the only things to germinate have been two out of twenty American walnuts. Next time, I am putting the potted up nuts in mouse-proof boxes. 0/20 for hazelnuts and chestnut germination is very disappointing #hazel #chestnut #reforesting #coppicing

  6. A look at an artisanal #charcoal maker in the UK. I find this article particularly fascinating having read Ruth Goodman's 'The Domestic Revolution' a while ago that covers the old practice of #coppicing and the different #woods for #cookery. theguardian.com/artanddesign/g #foodhistory

  7. Spent some time on the plot. Dug a bean trench and filled with grass clippings. Set up a hop pole using a coppiced ash shoot. Found a hazel growing in an inconvenient place and moved it. #hopbine #coppicing

  8. @atriverside i absolutely LOVE this article. Thank you so much for sharing it. This kind of #HistoricalEcology is just so wonderful - so important to really see, understand and hopefully revive all those cultural landscapes around us, #Coppicing, #Basketry #Wetlands and all

  9. @mikebrunt love your woven #willow bed. I’ve started doing this in my #garden, including my #worm #compost bed. Still getting the hang of it. Interested in growing large amounts of willow and #DogwoodOsier and want to learn good #coppicing techniques.

  10. Ginkgo biloba is reputedly better harvested when leaves are about to fall - maximising flavonoids. Looking for info on harvesting, I found this recent study on the effect of cutting back: Lu Z, Zhu L, Lu J, et al. (2022) Rejuvenation increases leaf biomass and flavonoid accumulation in Ginkgo biloba. Horticulture Research 9: uhab018, doi.org/10.1093/hr/uhab018. This would suggest that #coppicing #Ginkgo can increase the harvest of active constituents in the leaves.

spotted sommat rather sweet & thought i'd share.
my insta has been full of #mentalhealth & #somatics in recent years. it's been helpful, but now i'm regrowing, reentering the world with a new life direction.
i started following #woodcrafts people, beautiful #spooncarving & #coppicing folk. now my search page is *full* of suggested beautiful, inspirational woodcraft images, instead of reminders of how broken i have been/the world is.
    it's a little thing, & such a healthy thing! 🧡

  12. anyone here #coppicing or #greenwoodworking?

i'm based in #SouthWestWales retraining in #woodlandsmanagement (from a long history of #creativedigitalculture) so am especially keen to find my nerdy local #treefolk <3

i'm also #neuroqueer - #autistic #adhd #cptsd #queer #gendernonconforming #sober and #unlearning societal 'norms' (ugh) so i can be the human i want and need to be, and can play my part in the #movements making the world safe, welcoming and joyful for everyone.
