Copa 71 is an amazing documentary on the Women’s Football World Cup in Mexico 1971.
It never fails to amaze and anger me how stupid the bans on Women’s Football are.
A few things in the film stood out:
The atttempted FIFA ban inadvertently pushed the tournament to bigger stadiums and greater success.
The fights on the pitch in the semi final, these matches mattered.
The abscence of support for the players on their return home.
Well worth anyone’s time to watch this.

Finished watching Copa 71. So good and infuriating at the same time. Just to think about where women’s football would be today if the men of FIFA had not had such fragile egos or deep misogyny… women’s football would be on a whole other level by now. I mean these badass women FILLED Estadio Azteca in México City. That’s 110k people watching women’s football. 🤯
