  3. Prescribed burn in the the Valley of the Giants gone wrong
Save the tourist infrastructure not the national park?

"A plan to protect tourist infrastructure has resulted in an estimated 180 large trees falling over. Western Australian authorities say the planned burn was carried out east of the Valley of the Giants precinct to protect visitor infrastructure. While the tourist hub was untouched, conservationists say the fire has been "catastrophic" for a nearby section of bushland, and the outcome should have been predicted."

  5. Took a hike out at my old stomping grounds at the former Camp Cachalot, now the Cachalot Wildlife Management area. Looks like there's been a controlled burn over the northern part of the property, probably a hundred-ish acres.

  7. Neat science: for 20 years, the UC Berkeley forestry folks have been running an experiment to see which of:
    - thinning,
    - controlled burns,
    - both those,
    - suppressing fires

results in the healthiest forest. Results: everything but suppressing fires is good, and thinning plus controlled burns be best. Thinning results in enough lumber to pay for the work.

Of all the ways to protect BC communities from increasingly furious wildfire seasons, few have been as widely endorsed as the tactical, controlled use of fire.

  10. If you see smoke rising off of Angel Island today, fear not (as I initially did), it’s a controlled burn. It’s stretching out over the bay and very visible from downtown.
