TIL: The term "cybernetics", which I thought had been laughed out of the room in the 1970s, is alive and well. Sigh.
A recent article in Science argues that protein consumption control in flies looks like something "cybernetic", i.e. a feedback system. And it claims that this work may tell us something about obesity in humans. Sheesh. "In mice" has been a running joke in biology for an age, and now we've advanced to "in flies".

It does talk a bit about code in general terms, but if you just want to understand the fundamentals of what PID does and what each term contributes.

About the book
This text is divided into two major parts.
The aim of the first part is to convince the reader that the random world begins directly in his or her own living room because, in fact, all modern life is based on probability. The first part is on the concept of probability and considers making decisions in conflict situations, optimizing queues, games, and the control of various processes, and doing random searches.The second part of this text shows how fundamental chance is in nature using the probabilistic laws of modern physics and biology as examples. Elements of quantum mechanics are also involved, and this allows the author to demonstrate how probabilistic laws are basic to microscopic phenomena. The idea is that the reader, passing from the first part of the book to the second one, would see that probability is not only around us but it is at the basis of everything.

So, on my last DC-DC converter, I left off messing around with the control loop. I got it working decently, but there were still some oscillations. Thinking about it, this was probably due to ADC resolution, which is 10 bits on that microcontroller, while the PWM register I was using is 8 bits.
If you think about it (which I didn't initially), that means that you get quantization error, since the ADC can read voltages and currents the PWM (via the MOSFETs and the rest of the converter) won't produce. In other words, the controller is demanding more than what the converter can do.
I think I can maybe add some extra filtering to fix that. In the future, I'll try using the 16 bit register for PWM as well.
