wastewater career change update:
with the help of a friend, i have managed to get an internship with a local engineer who has a lot of septic system projects.
i've completed a couple projects with him so far, and am in the middle of a third. yay!
i handle most of the aspects of a septic project. so far we've done site inspections together (which includes going to the site, doing percolation tests, taking any measurements, etc.). then he gives me some general direction and i do the (very simple) calculations and drawings. he gives me feedback on the drawings until they are correct. then i fill out the paperwork for the permit, put everything together into a pdf packet, and send it to him. if he sees anything that needs to be changed in the packet, i fix it, then send it back to him. he submits the final packet to the department of health. that's the job.
things were tough at first because i was using librecad to do the drawings, and i was struggling to make things look how i wanted. i ended up buying a refurbished thinkpad with windows, my dad got his architect friend to send me a mysterious copy of autocad that somehow works (i didn't even know he had an architect friend?), and now i'm up and running with autocad on a windows machine, so i feel like i can make much better drawings.
i'm still struggling with some aspects, like i don't really know how to decide where the septic system should go in relation to the house. i need my employer's guidance on that. aside from offsets (it needs to be a minimum of 5 feet from any buildings and minimum of 5 feet from any property lines), we didn't really get any instruction in our classes about how to place them. so right now for example, i'm waiting to hear from my employer about whether i've picked a good spot for the current project, and i kind of can't move forward until i hear from him (i've had to re-do several drawings so far because the placement needed to be changed, and figuring out what drawings depend on what info has been part of the learning process).
luckily, the standards for septic plan drawings seem to be much looser compared to actual architectural plans. i suspect that's hawai'i-based because they're processing a lot of these and as long as the drawings have the info they need, the details of how everything is formatted is less important. at any rate, my employer (yes, i'm getting paid!) has accepted my drawings with their inconsistent annotation formattings, and numbers that cross lines, and various other issues.
i'm getting better at autocad with every drawing and i'm very impressed with the level of documentation they have for solving all kinds of problems. i'm going to continue my learning so that i can do these drawings more efficiently. and in the category of "trying to run before you can walk", i'm already wondering how it might work to have a program where you input the dimensions of the leach field, what kind of pipes or chambers you're using, how many rows you want, and it generates some geometry for you. so i guess that's more of a "trying to fly before you can walk" situation 😅 .
anyway, things are progressing! my employer has accepted my drawings and he seems to want to continue working with me, which is already extremely surprising and marvelous! i am enjoying the work and time goes pretty quickly while i'm working (i feel sooooooo lucky that this is the case because this has been a problem in basically every other job and career i've ever had).
so yea, that's the situation. i just have to keep trying, improve my skills, keep showing up, and keep doing the work i guess.

School/work update:
classes ended in may, and i just submitted my first draft septic design to the engineer that i'm interning with 🥹
i don't know if i did it right, but at least i did it in a fairly timely manner.
I was struggling with LibreCAD the entire time. during classes, I had a loaner windows PC from the school that was pre-loaded with AutoCAD. all of our instruction was in AutoCAD. But now that's gone, so i'm getting used to LibreCAD. I still haven't figured out how to do like a layout for print, with titles and a little scale annotation on the bottom 🤔
anyway, it feels nice to be working in the realm of physical things. i think that was maybe one of the (many!) things that i found frustrating about software: there was no referent in the real world. nothing i could hang my hat on. and i couldn't keep all the abstractions in my head 😖 . with these septic designs, it's like "ok, i drew the design for that part, what's next? ok i need to do the drawing for this part. what do i need to know in order to do that?" i dunno. maybe it'll get harder, but so far it seems easier for my particular brain.
As a bonus, here's a photo from the location where the septic is going to go. We went out there yesterday to do a soil percolation test.

Good morning all! It's an idyllic start to the day here: windows open, light drizzle outside, room temperature, birds are singing. Getting started with some schoolwork so when I do nothing with my life the rest of the day I don't feel like such a loser 😆
Oh, let's do a three good things.
1. Slept all the way through the night.
2. I *think* I figured out my plumbing woes, now just need to figure out how to correct the issue.
3. As stated above, it is a damn fine morning, and a great day to be alive.#threegoodthings #tgt #morning #MorningVibes #continuingEducation

Just submitted my final assignment for my AutoCAD class yaaaay. The class was completely online async. The instructor was really good. I'm gonna email her and ask if she teaches any more-advanced AutoCAD classes because this was just an intro.
Not only is she a good instructor, but she helped me secure from the school a loaner laptop with AutoCAD pre-installed on it (since my personal laptop has Linux and can't run AutoCAD). Plus, the loan period is for the whole semester.
Anyway, thank you Ms. S for being such a great instructor! 🥰
Now I'm gonna reward myself with a little art-making as a treat.

1) The #IndieMusic singer & songwriter #JeffTweedy.
2) The #Podcaster & so-called #LifeCoach #MelRobbins
And 3) the #ProtestSong singer & songwriter
#JesseeWellsInteresting people who have large following far beyond the small corner of the world that I occupy. 🤷

I'm out of the clinical game (many years now), and so I'm out of all the loops. I'm getting CE invitations to learn about something called "polyvagal theory", apparently (?) asserting that vagal responses (or polyvagal? IDK) are involved in, and can ameliorate, psychological disorders.
Before I do a deep dive, does anyone have a one-sentence summary of what this is?
