Silence—no music, no static. Just breathing. Slow. Measured.

“Hello?”

A pause. The breathing didn’t stop.

“Thank you for continuing to hold.”

The voice wasn’t automated anymore. It had weight now. Presence.

“You’ve reached Tier One Awareness. Most disconnect before this.”

“I didn’t dial anything.”

A soft hum.

“No,” it said. “You were dialed.”

David stared at the blank page as if it had betrayed him.

"Fuck", he said, softer now, as if sound might disturb whatever fragile impulse had yet to come.

The pen hovered. Nothing. No thoughts. No words.

Then something moved.

At first, he thought it was his hand twitching from too much caffeine. But no. The pen touched the paper and began writing on its own.

David froze.
