  1. Highway Adoption

The truck ahead of me has a bumper sticker that says “Stay in your lane.”

At first blush – good advice. But further introspection reveals a flaw. In truth, the lane I am currently in is not my own. Nor is the lane you are in yours either. None of us can lay claim to these streets. At least not individually. Contrary to popular belief, we are a collective.

Perhaps a truer bumper sticker is the one that says “Share the road.”

Namely, the entire road is for all. The lane I am in is not MY lane. It is available to anyone else who needs it. You are welcome in the lane I am in, and I hope that I am welcome in the one you are in.

Alas, too often I forget this truth. I am too quick with my tongue or horn and too slow with a kind gesture.

    So come on over.

You are welcome here in this lane as well.

No schedule. No perceived deadline for my ETA. No stress or emotional attachment to the human construct of time. No amount of hubris or disdain.

Nothing is worth the destruction of a hospitable spirit while one is driving.

  6. What Did I Accomplish Today?

    What is the
    measure
    of a
    good day?

    Accomplishment
    can be a strange
    idol.
    It promises
    peace
    after one more
    task,
    one more sermon,
    one more song,
    one more post,
    one more
    finished
    thing.

    But then
    the day
    ends,
    and my soul
    still has to
    live
    with itself.

    Here in the
    twilight,
    rather than
    asking
    what I have
    done,
    a better
    measure
    might be:

    Did I become
    more free today?

    Did I become
    less bitter?

    Did I tell
    the truth?

    Did I release
    what was
    not mine
    to carry?

    Did I move
    even slightly
    toward
    love?

    A clear mind
    and
    a better heart
    may be
    holier than
    a completed
    checklist.

    So maybe
    my evening prayer
    is simply this:

    Lord,
    I release the day.
    I release what I finished
and what I failed to finish.
    Clear my mind.
    Soften my heart.
Let me sleep as one who is loved,
not as one who must prove his worth.
    Amen

  7. At the Table in Thunder

Here now, late at night, alone at the table, I draw to the sound of thunder and the rattle of rain against the windows.

The house is dark except for this small pool of light. Outside, the world is being washed, struck, shaken. Inside, my hand moves slowly across the page, making marks no one has asked for, no one is waiting for, and yet somehow they feel necessary.

The thunder speaks in a language older than words. The rain answers in thousands of small syllables. And I, with my pen, add my thin human line to the chorus.

Perhaps this, too, is prayer: not asking, not explaining, not performing. Just being awake with the storm. Just making something while the night makes music. Just sitting at the table as the rain reminds me that the world is still alive, still trembling, still being drawn by a hand larger than mine.

  8. I Am . . .

    I am the ringing chime
    I am the blowing breeze
    I am the pileated’s cry
I am the wind in the trees

I am the hush before thunder
    I am the trembling leaf
I am the ache beneath wonder
I am the prayer under grief

I am the shadow at evening
I am the gold on the hill
I am the creek softly speaking
I am the soul becoming still

I am the dog at the doorway
I am the lamp in the rain
I am the path through the meadow
I am the song after pain

I am not one thing only
I am neither fixed nor confined
I am the world God is breathing
in my body, spirit, and mind.

  11. This is a big picture - one I like very much!

It’s called ‘Monk at the Lake'

    Ink on paper.

    60cm x 84cm.

I love how the ink has broken up in places.

  12. Today I made a new Monk picture. Monk is battling his way along the top of an ominous black formation. There’s snow. The trees are bent by the wind. Birds above and below.

There’s an unsettling sense of Monk in struggle.

It’ll go on my website tomorrow unless someone wants it before then.

    Ink on A4 paper (30cm x 21cm)

£95. Free postage to Ireland/UK. At cost postage elsewhere.
