So there's this cool new artist/musician/photographer/model --- I guess everyone has to be multi-hyphenate now --- I found on TikTok:

https://www.tiktok.com/@illumitatiana?lang=en

She started? is part of? a music project called "Contact Sports" which released a cool music video for a cool song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhHZa11TdX0

It's got a fun retro tech aesthetic/vibe.

And some of her older TikTok stuff suggested she releases on #BandCamp! Nice!

But... hold on a sec.

Eventually, I found some kind of link tree:

https://contactsports.lnk.to/meandmymachine

No BandCamp :(

And then I see it, buried in a footer of one of the webpages: Warner Music Group (WMG).

NOOOOOOOO!!!!

There will never be a BandCamp release, just endless streaming bullshit. Notice in the screenshot how NONE of the NINE options given indicate an ability to BUY, to PURCHASE, to OWN the damned thing!

But there is the iTunes store with a "download" button at least.

But the "Download" button takes you to "Apple Music", which is JUST ANOTHER FUCKING STREAMING SERVICE.

But... apparently you *can* actually *purchase* the DRM-free music?

Oh. You have to do that through the iTunes app. Which only works on Mac and Windows. Because of course it won't work on Linux. And of course they won't set up a web site either.

Ok. How do I Actually Support™ this artist AND get to actually own the music in a non-DRM-encumbered manner?

The answer is: a Compact Disc. A CD-ROM. In 2026.

Fine. I bought it. It will ship October 02 2026.

But in the meantime...

I'm just gonna pirate your shit, WMG. What kind of fucked up world am I living in where the least-friction option is a fucking CLI program called yt-dlp?

The 16 Oct edition of The Elephant covered the controversy over allowing under-14s in contact sports;

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/experts-call-for-ban-on-contact-sports-for-under-14s-as-brain-injury-evidence-mounts-the-elephant/4CHVNSPLNNHTBPJ5DUQGRYKBNA/

When you get to the Mum justifying the regular knocks to the head her son's sport involves, I want you to imagine that she's talking about letting the same under-14 year old son drink alcohol. Would those same rationalisations and whattaboutisms fly in that case?

We had a fantastic time at the LI Roller Rebels game on Saturday! It’s always a fun time, and I always love taking shots of the jammers zooming around the court as they soldier forward towards the next wall! #rollerderby #rollerskates #sports #sportsphotography #contactsports #sonycamera #sonya7rv #sony2470gmii #adobelightroom
