  7. #Transport for #London has awarded Indra Group a new seven-year contract to operate and develop its revenue collection systems, including Oyster and #contactless #ticketing, with options to extend the deal. Indra will be responsible for the operation, maintenance and expansion of the system, as well as managing the Oyster retail network. More than 90 per cent of Tube and bus journeys are now paid for using Oyster or contactless, with pay as you go contactless set to expand to more stations across the southeast by 2026. The contract also includes plans to modernise the 20-year-old Oyster system, potentially introducing account-based ticketing and new digital features. Indra will work with #TfL and partners to ensure a smooth transition from current operator Cubic, with some staff transferring. The contract is valued at £587.6 million and began on 15 January 2026.

  8. The #Financial Conduct Authority is planning changes that would give #banks and payment providers greater flexibility to set contactless payment limits. Firms with strong fraud controls would be able to set their own limits, respond to inflation and new #technology, and offer customers more choice, including the option to set personal limits or turn contactless off. #Contactless payments continue to grow, with nearly 95% of eligible in-store card transactions made this way in 2024. Existing consumer protections will remain, including reimbursement for unauthorised transactions. The FCA says the changes aim to support convenience, choice and innovation while maintaining security. The new rules will take effect from March 2026, though most firms are expected to keep current limits initially.

  9. Cardiff Bus will introduce weekly fare capping from 10 November 2025, making travel simpler and better value. Passengers using #contactless Tap On, Tap Off will have their fares automatically totalled through the week. Once the cost reaches that of a weekly ticket, no further payments will be charged for the rest of the week. To qualify, customers must use the same contactless card for all journeys and tap on and off each time. The scheme applies to adult fares only. Weekly capping removes the need to buy a weekly ticket in advance, offers automatic savings, and gives flexibility to travel as often as needed without extra cost. Designed to make bus #travel fairer and easier, it ensures passengers always pay the best possible fare while enjoying a simple, cashless way to move around #Cardiff in #Wales.

  21. Really excited to see the effort being put into accessing 7816 cards (e.g. contact and contactless cards) with a PCSC-like interface on github.com/WICG/web-smart-card

It appears to be entirely driven by Google folks, which is interesting.

Seems like there was functionality to enable connecting to readers at the USB level but it was removed from Chrome in the last few years because of <handwave> "security concerns". Bummer. Not sure how the WICG effort is any different, but I hope it gets out there quickly.

Not all smart card use cases are just ID card use cases!

  22.
