  13. Trump’s Tariff Tantrum: Why a One-Two Punch on Canada and Generic Drugs Hurts America and the GOP

by Winston Wendell I’ve watched the White House do the same thing over and over: grab a tariff, call it “targeted,” and insist it’ll only hurt foreign rivals. But now, they’re rolling out up to 50% tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian goods and threatening a 100% duty on generic pharmaceuticals starting in 2028. It’s familiar, sure except the risks are bigger and the fallout is faster. As someone who wants economic policy to help regular people, not steamroll them, I see this as a […]

When is a rebate not really a rebate? Or at least not as big of a rebate as advertised?

Back in March I bought some routine medications for our dog, and got a coupon for a $20 rebate. The rebate came in the form of a $20 pre-paid MasterCard debit card. It has an expiration in October, which is coming up.

So today I had something I wanted to buy on Amazon for just *under* $20, and I thought that this was my chance...

But with tax it was just *over* $20, and here's the crux of the issue: Amazon doesn't let you use multiple debit/credit cards on one order.

I ended up picking a couple of small items that with tax totaled $16.92, and used the card for that. So $3.08 of the rebate is likely to go unused.

This hassle is *not* an accident. The companies that give rebates make the process harder so that the consumer leaves some of the money on the table. Many would probably just give up and lose the entire $20. They get to look like their prices are lower without actually making them lower. We get (partially) scr*wed.
