When is a rebate not really a rebate? Or at least not as big of a rebate as advertised?

Back in March I bought some routine medications for our dog, and got a coupon for a $20 rebate. The rebate came in the form of a $20 pre-paid MasterCard debit card. It has an expiration in October, which is coming up.

So today I had something I wanted to buy on Amazon for just *under* $20, and I thought that this was my chance...

But with tax it was just *over* $20, and here's the crux of the issue: Amazon doesn't let you use multiple debit/credit cards on one order.

I ended up picking a couple of small items that with tax totaled $16.92, and used the card for that. So $3.08 of the rebate is likely to go unused.

This hassle is *not* an accident. The companies that give rebates make the process harder so that the consumer leaves some of the money on the table. Many would probably just give up and lose the entire $20. They get to look like their prices are lower without actually making them lower. We get (partially) scr*wed.

  34. Our home has #gas and #electricity and I have been tracking our usage of both for over a decade. The plan has always been to #transition away from gas and go full electric for a few reasons, however it hasn't been until 2025 that the equivalent electricity for gas usage has actually been cheaper than using gas.

Then suddenly it is announced that electricity #prices will rise by up to 10% from July 2025. This will make it cheaper to continue using gas than it will to move over to electricity (excluding the health benefits of removing gas).

Forgive the conspiracy theorist perspective but that seems way to big of a coincidence to have not been purposeful. Especially when you consider 'power' companies often produce both electricity and gas.

    theadvocate.com.au/story/89755

And it certainly isn't the right way to go about making the energy transition equitable.
