This is a real breakthrough at an unusual time! The Kramer-MC still boots from its ROM and can still write data to its screen RAM. And it does so via the originally intended DS8286 bus driver. This didn't always work because the system bus and internal data bus were still completely shorted. The previous owner didn't finish, even though the computer was prepared for CP/M.
It took a bit of courage to cut the eight data lines near the connector :D Now I think it's working as intended. The boot ROM is active first reset. A flip-flop is activated via pin 37 on the UA855D, which makes the ROM invisible at its /E pin. While the ROM is still active, the parallel RAM can still be written in parallel (shadowing). The data bus is protected by the DS8286. Implemented with a total of 3 TTL ICs (K555LA3, 74LS74, and 74LS138). Awesome.
