We have a solitary horse chestnut tree in our front garden. Most years we collect a few conkers but this year it has excelled and so far we have collected over 450 and it's not empty yet. We've never managed to collect more than this bowl will hold before but I think we might just do it this year.

I know what you will say - "Of course, we're well aware of the news of the #conkers world, who isn't?!" But maybe there are some enthusiasts of #BritishCulture out there who haven't heard the latest scandals.

As I'm fed up with politics, home, abroad, actually just about everyfuckingwhere, I decided to go look what's happening in the chess world, and any other games.
Chess is currently rocked by another cheating scandal where a player has been kicked out of the Spanish Team Championship for using a hidden mobile phone to get computer generated assistance.
While this is a bit disturbing, I'm more aggrieved that the Spanish Team Championship is being held in the Spanish enclave of Melilla which is actually in Morocco and is suggestive of Spain's colonial history!
From a cheating point of view, I'm more disturbed by the shenanigans in the world of conkers. King Conker has been accused of using a steel conker, and conker string marking. There's even another Conker Organisation which allows "anything goes" conker battles including 'stampsies'!!

The #conkers were used as a source of #starch for #fermentation using the Clostridium acetobutylicum method devised by Chaim Weizmann to produce #acetone for use as a solvent for the production of #cordite, which was then used in #MilitaryArmaments. Weizmann's process could use any source of starch, but the government chose to ask for conkers to avoid causing starvation by depleting food sources. But conkers were found to be a poor source & the factory only produced acetone for 3 months; however, they were collected again in WWII for the same reason.

Probably not up for much longer, but we've been catching some recorded TV and some of the #CFB bowl games. Ohio vs Georgia on at the moment. I have family in Cleveland so technically I should have a favourite here, but Ohio refer to their team as #Buckeyes rather than #Conkers as is right and proper so, yeah. tricky.
