  1. Oxford (UK) recently introduced a “congestion charge” for cars entering the city during peak hours. This is meant to reduce traffic jams - which are really, really bad here - and provide funds to improve public transport, with inner city residents and a few groups such as carers getting free passes. The BBC reported on initial changes in Oxford traffic data, discussing the impact with Anne Gwinnett from the Open Roads for Oxford “company”*, which opposes the congestion charge (bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c79x78).
Out of curiosity I looked up Dr Gwinnett - and wow, she’s previously been in the (local) news for the trifecta of Covid (vaccine) conspiracies, climate change denial and anti-LGBT hate-mongering (oxfordclarion.uk/the-views-of- ). Maybe a bit more vetting of interviewees would be helpful?

#Verkehrswende

  17. How to Sell Congestion Pricing

"Governor Hochul can do a lot to ensure this traffic tax earns out, both financially and politically — and if she can get it right, it will be a model of Democratic recovery and impact. Her challenge boils down to three things: show that it works, for whom it works and why New York decided to do it in the first place."

  18. On the first weekday of the #NYC #CongestionCharge the commute through Lincoln Tunnel took less than 14 minutes in the morning, and less than 11 minutes in the evening.

Did people stay home because of snow? because of the uptick in covid cases? because they took the train?

Would be great to see ridership data on Metro North, LIRR, NJ Transit, etc.on a similar before and after comparison.

  19. Does the #NYC #CongestionCharge work?

See the transit time at each tunnel and bridge into Manhattan on this interactive congestion tracker.

    Play with it:
    congestion-pricing-tracker.com/

Spoiler: At rush hour this morning, it took less than 14 minutes to get through the Holland Tunnel, compared to about 20 minutes on Monday mornings before the congestion charge.

  20. "Around half of New York City households do not have a car, with 85% of commuters to Manhattan using the city’s network of subways, trains and buses to get there. It’s estimated that only 1.5% of all commuters under the plan would pay the full $15 fee."

For that 1.5% they stopped the #CongestionCharge.

  21. "Over a Zoom call, Nicholas told me she believed [a] #CongestionCharge is the most effective measure because it makes the “cost of driving visible.”

She added that currently, many of the costs of motoring are hidden."

  26. Congestion charges are the most effective way to reduce urban car use:
    theconversation.com/12-best-wa

If you don’t like the proposed #Cambridge #CongestionCharge for the Sustainable Transport Zone, but you agree we must reduce car use to lower climate impacts and lessen air pollution, then:

    1) Suggest changes to the proposal to make it more equitable and/or practical; and/or

    2) Lobby for other policies, e.g. fewer parking spaces, more car-free streets, and resident-only traffic zones.

  28. @PhilGoodwin @transport Just having some local discussions on this topic in Cambridge. A congestion charge is proposed to fund buses, but we're absolutely at the 'panic' stage & I fear the results will cause ditching of any charge (AND therefore investment!).
