  1. On my way to the Joint NSO - GfÖ Conference in Odense, Denmark. First time ever I get to present something at an ecology conference (I'll talk a bit about making social-ecological network approaches more actionable in urban settings).
Just browsed the program and I am so excited! I am such a fan of stuff ecologists are doing (secretly jealous, my ecology education stopped at intro lectures) and there is so much cool stuff from "wild cities" to herbivores in Alpine regions and... lots of stuff I have no idea about but it sounds cool, bugs and birds etc. 😉😅.
As always, no flying and my trusty #Brompton is with me (I will try to sneak away one afternoon for a short ride to the sea), took the night train yesterday Zürich-Hamburg and now on the way to Denmark. Night train was alright, not sure if the beds got smaller or I got bigger...
Miss the kids a lot already 😢 so happy it is a short trip. And so grateful my wife supports the extra time it takes me to do these trips ground-based, as it does add at least another night she has to take care of the whole Rasselbande.

  2. On my way to #polnet conference in Manchester, currently on the first leg of the Zürich-Paris-London-Manchester train journey.

I've never taken a plane during my academic career. It's one of the relatively easy things in terms of reducing the carbon cost of your research practice. I always put up a little post about these train journeys still, as a little ritual and to make my small contribution to normalizing the practice.

Looking outside is an unwelcome reminder of why we should care.
France just looks incredibly dry outside my TGV window. Shades of yellow instead of green.

  3. One of the cool things about long-distance, ground-based travel with the #foldingbike is that you can get up to some quite random excursions when you have some time to kill.
I am on my way back from #ecprgc25 in Greece and after arriving in Ancona, Italy by ferry, I had about four hours to kill.
On the map I saw a "Garibaldi Fortress" on a hill overlooking Ancona, which sounded pretty cool. So I went for a little ride. The fortress was definitely not in a state Garibaldi would have approved of 😅, but the cool thing was that I found an enjoyable bit of gravel to explore around Ancona in the process. I really like to explore these spaces just beyond the city, they are often very interesting assemblages of beautiful and mundane, lively and strange places.

  5. Sum up of my #ConferenceTravel:
    Distance travelled: 4394 km
Duration: 32 and 26 hours respectively. Due to (too) generous planning my arrivals were only delayed by 32 and 4 min respectively. 2,5 hours for changes between night and connecting trains seem to be enough.
    Costs: 790 € for all #train tickets (1st class).
If I had gone by flight, costs were at ca 720 € for tickets (economy) plus an extra night at a hotel before the flight home. Thus, a little time but no money saving.

  6. I am back home at the shores of the Bothnian Sea. We arrived in time after a quiet train ride. Even on Swedish Intercity trains coffee and tea are included in 1st class tickets which is a nice service to have.
I used the time on that last #train to fill in passenger rights claim forms for both German and Swedish railways. While the Swedish was submitted online, I still had to do paper work for the German railway.

  7. I appreciate the possibility to rebook #train tickets with shortest notice. Swedish long distance trains are subject to reservation. If you choose a rebookable or refundable ticket fare, you can change your connection until the time of departure which gives you quite a flexibility. No extra fees are charged. If rebook to a cheaper train, the difference will be refunded. If the new train is more expensive, you have to pay the difference.

  8. One of the stations with the most amazing views I know is situated about 15 min south of Stockholm. The station is bridging the mouth of Lake Mälaren where it meets the Baltic Sea.
We arrived at Stockholm main station two hours late. However, as I had planned with a generous break, I was able to rebook the last stage of my journey to an earlier #train. This means I will be home one hour earlier!

  9. After a good night's sleep Småland welcomes us with sunshine. I already got some exercise as I had to walk from the back to the front of the #train to fetch breakfast. It's a real weekend treat including not only chheese, granola and juice but als pancakes!

  10. On the last 150 km my journey to Hamburg took a disturbing turn due to police action at Hamburg main station. My thoughts go to those directly affected. I am very thankful that I can continue my #train trip and look forward to my bed on the night train Stockholm.

  11. Even the next connecting #train was reached. My next stop will be Hamburg main station. After two supercrowded local trains I really enjoy the quiet atmosphere of the highspeed distance train.

  12. After two inspiring workshop days it is time to say good bye. I am going by #train again.
We started 5 min late, and it was quite thrilling to see if I could catch my first connecting train or if my travel planning collapsed right from the start of the trip. - All went well!

  13. The final stage of my journey took me through green meadows and followed a lovely river. When the ticket inspector saw my ticket which had Hamburg as the start, she expressed symphathy: "Finally, there" - I did not tell her that my journey had already began 30 hours ago.
