My elderly Mom uses #Thunderbird as her client for gmail. Yay for #SilverFOSS !

This is the second time it's become unusable.

The culprit? the same as the last time...she has an ungodly amount of emails open in tabs and it just crashes. Troubleshoot mode seems to get by that to let me 'Close Other Tabs' on a tab.

Boggles my mind it doesn't have some way to 'open clean' without loading the open emails...or at least a setting.

  3. After reading more about badblocks and S.M.A.R.T., I'm actually a bit confused about how it's possible that a drive that severely damaged (80% of blocks are bad!) is passing its SMART test.

I'm running a long test now to see if it's just the normal test that missed it, but I'm curious if anyone has insight. It's not a high priority or anything (everything is backed up and it's not my main computer). I'm just curious how errors that egregious weren't detected.

  6. Android15 beta 3 - Private space is missing for me. For me, there is still one tab saying "Security & privacy", and the option is not there.

When I type private space in the search bar on the home screen, I don't find it there.

When I search within settings, I don't find it there either. any help / any tips for me? thank you.

  12. "Why isn't Bing AI accesable from my work computer? Can you please fix that?"

    1. Because No.
    2. Because literally nothing you do require it.
    3. Because it's legally impossible to let you use it.
    4. Because No ^2

  13. @neil Absolutely. My experience supporting "ordinary" users is that it's a lot more common for people to "lose" their #authenticator app than to lose access to their phone number, which is why #SMS is still the pragmatic king of #2FA.

On a related note: it can of course be tricky to convince people of the need for 2FA. Consequently, I've started enabling it for Google and Microsoft accounts as part of routine checkups with my customers, explaining it only vaguely as "an upgrade to make you much safer". I'm interested in people's thoughts on this. #ComputerSupport #ethics. I only do it if I'm able to print the recovery code(s) there and then. My customer base is predominantly older people who are very used to keeping pieces of paper safe.

  15. Somehow the Exchange Autodiscover CNAME record had disappeared from a customer's domain. Only their web designer has access to the #DNS — not a great situation, and from prior experience possibly not easy to resolve as they've probably got multiple clients' domains and sites on the same hosting account. So I emailed details of the record to create, noting that DNS was "famously daunting" and that the web designer was more than welcome to call me if in doubt. Days later, I heard back that they'd updated all existing (!) CNAME records with the value I'd given but that the host name was "not a changeable field". #ComputerSupport

  17. Here's an excellent animated cartoon about modern #password best practice, which I'm looking forward to sharing with as many of my customers as possible in 2023. Thanks @AnthonyCollette! #ComputerSupport loistavainfosecurity.com/the-m
