During the course, participants will learn about the basic principles of computer communication security. We will explain how authentication, confidentiality and integrity are achieved using various cryptographic techniques (e.g. MD5, SHA, AES and RSA). Next, participants will learn how to communicate securely on the web, send emails and connect to WiFi networks. Furthermore, we will demonstrate the security vulnerabilities in these scenarios using freely available hacking tools.

I wonder if it's just the people I've worked with, but security and compute infrastructure people tend to preferentially refer to hosts by their IP address rather than host name. always seemed counterintuitive to me since the host name is usually the more stable identifier

@ashley John S. Quarterman's The Matrix is a contemporaneous (publ. 1990) account of early "Computer Networks and Conferencing Systems Worldwide".

It focuses more on the technical, though the introduction is a fascinating take on the impact of the then-nascent networks' capabilities on China's Tienanmen Square protests. FidoNet is amongst the covered networks.

The WWW is not included, for obvious reasons.
