  1. Halide vs ProCamera, Project Indigo

Halide and ProCamera try to turn the iPhone into something closer to a “real camera.” They overlap a lot, but their design philosophy is very different.

Think of Halide as the photographer’s minimalist camera, while ProCamera is the Swiss-army-knife camera app.

  2. Creative applications of computational photography are severely obstructed by the absence of APIs in commercial cameras that would allow custom programs to fully exploit the features of camera hardware.

  3. Open source camera firmware should be able to run on cameras in the same way that open source operating systems are able to run on personal computers. With the rise of computational photography, camera firmware will be an all-important part of the photography experience.

  4. Digital cameras should become programmable like smartphones. Waiting for the day when mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras have an API like Android that allows users to program cameras.

  5. I always struggled w the #iPhone's default camera app due to its #ComputationalPhotography pipeline, which optimizes image quality but often produces flat and sometimes inconsistent results. Finally, I found a solution: the #NoFusion app. The app disables #Apple's multi-frame processing, yielding single-frame outputs with natural contrast and film-like characteristics closer to dedicated cameras. Here’s my personal review:

  6. I love the Project Indigo camera app, though on my older iPhone 14 Pro, Adobe disabled super-resolution by default because of overheating.

Settings are hidden in the app, but I figured out how to re-enable the feature from the FAQ: "How do I access camera settings?" helpx.adobe.com/project-indigo

So worth it for 12MP 2x and 6x shots.

  7. Been thinking...
while reading this and looking back at my photos

#Computationalphotography is the bad side of #LLM (Large Language Models).
It's true but now its super clear, how the digital photos are being tweaked towards something which looks great on a flat LCD screen but not great to edit outside the built in AI/mobile tools.
Thankfully #raw does exist but how many people actually shoot in RAW? Or even make the choice to switch depending on the context?

  8. Pretty grumpy at Apple for obvious reasons right now, but the gear still surprises me now and then.

Even my iPhone 13 mini, a way behind the state of the art, can do me this amazing handheld shot of my friends silhouetted against the lights of Bournemouth across the bay, with actual stars in the sky.

Or is it all made up?

  9. I've never seen a camera miss this hard. 😬 Maybe we’ve gone too far down the computational photography road when an iPhone (the most popular camera ever sold!) can’t take natural looking photos of people in a pumpkin patch…

I like a lot of computational photography advancements we’ve seen, but we gotta tone it down.

  10. New Smarter Image newsletter today: AI Means Always Looking to the Future.

Where's the line between forward-looking optimism and a rolling tomorrow that never arrives?

  11. In my newsletter The Smarter Image, which looks at how computational photography is fundamentally changing the art form, I wrote up some thoughts about Google's new Add Me camera feature coming to the Pixel 9 phones, and how the company is pushing AI/ML into some interesting areas.

  12. I wonder if film photography will end up being the only non-computational photography left standing?

  13. Two versions of the same photo. Originally taken by my iPhone 15 Pro in portrait mode. One of these has background blur using Apple’s portrait mode, the other using Adobe Lightroom’s lens blur feature (starting from a copy with the portrait mode turned off).

    Which do you prefer?

  15. CW: "Constellation" (TV series) spoiler

Subtle pun on absurdity of attempting to record reality using #ComputationalPhotography in the 3rd episode of #Constellation series as Henry (or is it Bud?) Caldera (played by Jonathan Banks) tries to take a photo of an interference pattern displayed on the screen he's looking at, only to end up with photos of white noise as his #iphone automatically irons out what it mistakenly believes are optical aberrations. :blobfacepalm:

  16. I’m going to have this baby face #lightfield of me for decades to come. I want more memories captured with this fidelity, and in motion. This portrait required me sitting still for a minute as a camera on automated rail captured me. It’s surreal how quickly science fiction becomes science fact. #LookingGlassGo #lookingglass #lkg #ComputationalPhotography

  17. I wonder when camera apps will have a real-time tilt-shift feature? Apps like VSCO can straighten and fix skewed perspective (example: of a building) in post, but I don’t always think about doing that post-processing when framing a photo and there isn’t enough margin to crop the subject properly after correcting skew. 🤔 #photography #ComputationalPhotography
