  1. @Kirsty Spot on – but this is straight out of the USA blueprint.
Howard's privatisation push (scrapping New Schools Policy, flooding private schools with public cash) mirrors US "school choice" reforms that boost charters/vouchers while starving public systems. Goal? Keep the masses under-educated, divided, and less likely to challenge the elite.
All we need now is to ditch compulsory voting (like most of the US), and watch the systematic sell-off of what's left of our public assets accelerate – no pesky informed voter turnout to stop it.
Education as a two-tier racket, democracy next? Not on my watch.

  6. All countries that claim to practice 'compulsory voting', don't. Because they all offer a 'no confidence' option. Which is, in effect, not voting.

It's a nonsense, and a distraction from meaningful attempts at democratic reform

A West Australian minister has condemned the emergence of “extremist” candidates nominating for the state’s forthcoming council elections,…

  8. @aj
To me, the main advantage of compulsory voting is that it imposes a concomitant responsibility on government. Government must ensure that everyone who should vote can vote.

Voter suppression becomes illegal. Not that breaking another law would bother the current US administration.

  9. "Mandate voting. Force people to take care of themselves and each other rather than they bow down then whimper off to take it like the sniveling minions we currently are."

Where is this obsession with mandatory voting coming from? It's a purely symbolic change with no practical effect.

  11. The non-voting % of electorates in modern democracies is seriously concerning...
    * Just 60% or so in the UK 2024
    * Mid-low 50's routinely in US
    Presidential elections
NZ is actually pretty impressive at mid-high 70's; Australia has compulsory voting.

    I think there's a growing case for #compulsoryvoting #nzpol

  12. "I think that as politicians we also have to look in the mirror and say; are we engaging the public? Because actually when the issues are put in front of people, and it seems like it's going to be a very important decision and there are real alternatives, turnout does go up."

  13. Maybe #Straya need to regime change the #USA and install a real democracy?

    #PreferentialVoting aka #RankedChoiceBallots

#Voting on a Saturday, with a polling place within walking distance for most people, easy to #vote in advance, and not too tricky to vote by post

and an independent federal body to draw electorate (district) boundaries, run polling places, and run the counting - like our #AEC aec.gov.au/

The Yanks can skip the #CompulsoryVoting if they insist. But it is good for calming politics no need for the "bring out the vote" intensity with "or the opposition will eat your kids" madness. And it makes some fraud even harder to do - like voter impersonation or dead people voting - if everybody votes in every election.

#Australian #democracy is not perfect, but i think we're probably close to the "least-broken"?

Our worst problem is #mining company influence, to parties and the public
🎶you're gonna get whacked, by the mining tax🎶

The expanding #Green and #Teal #CrossBench is providing some push back on the #mining lobby's environmental bullshit.

But we're still getting ripped off, if the government says we "can't afford" something, they're lying. We have an entire continent full of almost every mineral the world wants to buy, we just need to #tax it properly or nationalise it, not let a few individuals hoard all the profits.

But if we went full محمد مصدق or #Gough #Whitlam … then our friends the USA might decide we'd picked the wrong government and change it for us?

I don't necessarily want to change their government, I want to change how they elect it.

  14. @illusionofjoy I live in #Australia: we have Ranked Choice Voting (we call it preferential voting) and I'm a huge supporter.

Coupled with #compulsoryvoting, it generally induces politicians who want to be elected to move to the middle, but it also enables #voters to move the Overton window, because if single issue/small party candidates attract support, then major parties sit up and pay attention, and generally try to adopt policies that will regain support.

  15. @ForfarFairLady @IndyRichard @Funwithphotos it is compulsory & you get fined if you don’t turn up. Spoiling your ballot is however allowed. But it’s pretty much always been like that. No idea how it would go if you tried to introduce it in UK now. Guessing an uproar about authoritarianism, democracy etc

Might be more productive to get big registration drives underway

  16. Until recently when #Halloween began to take off here in #Australia, there were very few non-religious festivals where neighbours would come together, share food and have a shared experience. Being a #CompulsoryVoting nation, our elections have become this sort of tradition. While recently I have been an early-voter, this year for the Victorian election, I have enjoyed the experience of voting on the day, getting a #DemocracySausage, supporting the local school's bake sale, and generally "celebrating" democracy with my neighbours. #VicVotes

They also support ending #compulsoryVoting, which we believe is actually good for #democracy.
