" 'The NFEC has been coordinating repair cafés twice a year, and that will be incorporated into the event. We will also have a #composter sale pickup at the same time,' Ms. Van Eysden told the Town Board at the March 10 work session.
"At the NFEC’s Repair Cafés, the public can bring their household items — including small appliances, clothing, toys and bicycles to be repaired, and their knives to be sharpened.
" 'It’s a great community event, with neighbors helping neighbors to make things work again, with the added bonus of keeping those things out of the waste stream,' said Margaret deCruz, the NFEC Repair Café chair.
"Southold’s Waste Management department has been participating in a discounted compost bin and #RainBarrel sale program for the past year. The sale, open to Southold Town residents (other neighboring towns also have similar programs) is currently underway, online here, and residents can pick up their bins and barrels at the Expo.
" 'The reduction of food waste from backyard composting is a critical component in solving the regional solid waste crisis currently facing #LongIsland,' said Southold Town Solid Waste Coordinator Nick Krupski.
"Numerous environmental organizations will also have tables at the event. However, I own two of the terracotta-colored ones, and they have held up during #Maine weather (where it can be warm and rainy one day, freezing the next). Obviously, they should be drained and stored for the winter, but when that doesn't happen, the material seems to be forgiving (unlike the beige rainbarrels -- which are made from lighter plastic)...

Last week I noticed this compost tumbler on the side of a busy highway, at the entrance to a strip mall parking lot. After seeing it sit there for four days untouched I finally decided it was free game and took the truck to pick it up.
It was empty, still spins just fine, and has very little rust.No idea why it was there, but now it’s getting put to use making more soil for the garden.

(1) A very close friend who is a #gardener extraordinaire, #vermiculturist , super #composter & the organizer of many school gardens in #Okanogan county, has sent out an appeal for his friend, a #sustainable #food advocate in #Congo, who has had to flee his community under threat to his life. He has taken refuge in the UN HQ in Kinshasa. His story reminds me of the dangers progressives face around the world. We are helping him come to the US and hope to learn from him.
