  1. A Shared Lunch! Vol. 12 No. 3 of Canadian Food Studies is about being “in it” together, so we thought we’d follow that ethos and share our lunch with you… Or actually, our authors’ lunches.

Elaine Power starts it off with her shared lunch: “A bowl of squash, parsnip and carrot soup, made from my last CSA veggie box of the year, with Aleppo chilies on top; a local Honeycrisp apple; and some Manchego cheese.”

There are certainly some shared sensibilities between Power’s lunch and her responses to the CFS Choux Questionnaire. But why take our word for it? Read, and find out: doi.org/10.15353/cfs-rcea.v12i

  6. Just signed up for a #CommunitySupportedAgriculture #CSA farm box to support local farmers and boost resilience in my community! Each week, I receive fresh organic fruits, vegetables, mushrooms, and in return, the local community gets more food security. Way tastier than store bought since it's local which means it's actually ripe! If you want to eat healthier and help create more #resilientcommunities, I highly recommend giving it a try! 🍏🥦🍄 localharvest.org/

  12. CW: Online event 12th June about "Soil health and EU competitiveness"

I received this invitation. (comments at the end)

    ------------------------------------
    Dear Colleagues,

The first part of the 5th EUSO Stakeholders Forum will be an online event on 12th June, focussing on the topic "Soil health and EU competitiveness". During this event, case studies from the private sector will show how healthy soils can promote competitiveness in terms of the three pillars:
    a) closing the innovation gap
    b) decarbonisation and competitiveness
    c) reducing excessive dependencies

The event includes presentations from the biotechnology sector, agribusiness, banking-financial sector, remediation industry, start-ups, carbon farming, development of clean products and retail industry.

More information as Agenda, Speakers and Registration can be found in the page:

    esdac.jrc.ec.europa.eu/euso/5t

    Kind Regards,
    Panos PANAGOS, PhD.

    Scientific/Research Officer
Project Leader of EU Soil Observatory (EUSO)

    -----------------------------------

    My thoughts:
Ok, we need urgently more awareness about soils. We need more #OrganicAgriculture, #RegenerativeAgriculture, #AgroecologicalTransition, #CommunitySupportedAgriculture and much more. What we *definitely* don't need, is a meeting with NOT A SINGLE FARMER, but people from Syngenta, Bayer, Nestlé and a bunch of other industry representatives to allow them to show that they are trying soo hard to protect our environment while they do everything they can to sabotage meaningful policy changes. Venture capital funded Start-ups and old villains are definitely not the structural change the agrifood-system needs.

Maybe it will still be an informative event, who knows.

    Thank you for listening.

  13. A while ago (I won't confess how long ago) I put a jar of minced Lila Luzi ( fryd.app/en/library/plants/758 ) in the pantry to ferment in a 3% salt pickle solution.

Today I processed the long fermented mash with some onion, garlic, sugar and apple cider vinegar into a delicious flavourful and spicy hot sauce that builds up and hits you when you no longer expect it.

  23. When life gives you hot peppers...

Or in this case, the csa farm 😉
You dry them to have enough for the winter!

Convection oven at 95°C, 5 or so hours. (check every now and then to make sure they don't burn, remove the dry ones).

  28. Imitation is the highest form of admiration.

Taking fresh produce from our csa & chef ideas from our last dinner out to make today's dinner of spicy roasted chickpeas, roasted patty pan squash, and carrot green pesto.

  29. Today's dinner: stuffed courgette flowers.

I used pea protein mince, mixed with minced onions & garlic& some fresh basil, & seasoned with salt & pepper. The courgettes were then sprayed with oil & baked for 20 mins in a 180C convection oven.

They were served alongside roasted potatoes (peeled, cubed, olive oil, salt & pepper, 30 mins in the oven) and some extra courgette.

The difference in flavour between the two types of courgettes (our CSA farmer told us they were different) was remarkable.

  30. Today I’m catching up on #domesticity in general. Cooking, cleaning, tidying.

I’m making a thing called “tamale pie” which is basically a bastardised chili con carne with lots of random veggies in it, and cheesy polenta on top a la shepherd’s pie. My housemate who “doesn’t like Mexican food” loves it — though this is, of course, in no way surprising as this is a long way from actual Mexican food 😂 I’m going to bake a few of them in smaller pans and freeze some.

My #kombucha has got into a state of extreme sourness with the hot weather, so I’m feeding it lots of sweet tea and drinking as much as I can to keep making room for more.

I’ve got the #slowcooker on with a batch of pork bones (from my ethical/sustainable meat CSA (#CommunitySupportedAgriculture), onion, ginger, and star anise, to make an Asian-style pork stock that I freeze in batches the right size to make an easy bowl of noodle soup whenever I want.

And I’ve got milk that needs using, so I’m going to go pick up a cauliflower and make cauliflower #MacAndCheese, again a big batch, and freeze some of it.

I might have to shift some stuff around in the freezer to make room… wish me luck!

  31. About 10 years ago the farming community in my area did an experiment. They created a community supported agriculture (CSA) group where they grew grains, (oat, rye, wheat) and a few other things with money contributed to them ahead of time, then transported the products up the lake where we live by sail boat to a distribution centre in the larger town.

There were all kinds of problems but they managed to do it for at least 3 years. The concept folded because of people being unaware of how hard it is to do something like that, the sailors didn't understand transporting food, some of the grain products weren't winnowed and cleaned to the liking of the consumers and many consumers didn't realize what they were getting into needing dry airtight storage and tools like grain grinders to make flour and needing to take the time to sort over grain like that before grinding.

BUT, it was proven that it could work with better planning and management. I think eventually, when the need is greatest, all involved will do it again when expectations are lowered and knowledge is greater. I participated in it and since then have been buying grain and grinding it myself for flour.
