We must demonstrate that our ability to self-govern is better at meeting our needs than the corporations’ or state’s supposed mandate to govern. And we must not just govern under the existing structures; rather, we me must remake the shape of governance to be more democratic and ecologically responsive – from the state house to the workplace to the blocks where we live.

For too long the people who live and care for the places they call home have been intentionally dispossessed of the decision making power to govern their home. In moments of disaster this unjust power dynamic of the Extractive Economy leads to harmful, unaccountable decision making that doesn’t put the wellbeing of people and the land at the forefront of recovery. I really would have been surprised if [right-wing thugs] had come through London or Birmingham. I got a WhatsApp message saying they were coming through Handsworth in Birmingham, where it’s 80% ethnic minority, and I just knew that was never going to happen.

Look, maybe they planned it and then they were cowards, but I just think they were never going to follow through. Realistically you can’t do an English Defence League march through someone else’s neighbourhood! They’d just get a kicking. Cowardice is a huge part of these British KKK types, pick people off when they feel strong, they’re not going to take on a whole community like that.

Let me add as well, and I think this is something that’s been hugely underplayed in mainstream discussions, that it’s actually because there was so much racial violence in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s – when I was at school, we’d see National Front signs in people’s windows – precisely because of this racial violence and history, Black and Brown communities rallied together to defend themselves.

And so because there’s a history of us defending ourselves, that’s why these far-right racists aren’t going to be coming back to these predominantly Black and Brown areas, where they know they can’t win. It’s not just coincidental, it’s part of our resistance to racism in this country, and it’s a story that’s underplayed. It’s community self-defence which has stopped National Front, English Defence League and all these other incursions.

For one, this is the first Shabbos in the new Jewish month of Adar, which holds out the notion that joy will increase. But what joy can one find in Christian fascists, neo-Nazis, and their fellow brethren calling for a “Day of Hate” against Jews tomorrow, on our Shabbat, with its joys?

And second, how is one to disengage from the world of work—as we’re “commanded”/invited by Shabbat—and instead rest in light of this? How is one to dwell in the sacred, leaving behind the profane, the common (like, say, the hegemony of Christian patriarchal white supremacy), for the 25 hours of Shabbes when a Day of Hate against Jews is unrestfully launched and thus there’s so much antifascist work to do, including community self-defense?

Of course, every day under fascism—and the United States is already there—is a day of hate, a day of targeting, a day of no rest for the weary antifascist.

Yet just as we rebels call for “days of action” to direct our love and solidarity toward the direct action of dismantling various forms of hierarchy and domination, the fascists are likely putting special effort into their Day of Hate. And even if their direct actions fall short of their aims, which include, as one flyer asserts, being “loud and clear” that “the one true enemy … is the Jew,” like our days of action, such moments can have many impacts, from visibility for a message to bolstering one’s ranks to causing a certain amount of trouble.
