  1. Tracing the Spine of Clinical Psychology

Clinical psychology did not emerge all at once; it assembled itself slowly, vertebra by vertebra, through laboratories, asylums, wars, and the quiet persistence of those who believed the mind could be understood with both rigor and compassion. This week’s material traces that long spine of the profession — the testing, the ethics, the conflicts, the care — revealing a field that has always been shaped by tension, curiosity, and the steady glow of becoming.

  2. In response to Dr. Gratzer's Reading of the week on AI & Therapy (link found below)

    davidgratzer.com/reading-of-th

Dr. Gratzer begins "As patients struggle to access care, some are looking to AI for psychotherapy. Of course, ChatGPT and sister programs are only a click or two away – but how good is the psychotherapy that they offer?"

I think the question of asking "how good is the psychotherapy" is not a very good question. I know you can ask better questions than that, Dr. Gratzer.

Below is a journal by Dr. Sundar provides a differing perspective.

Readily accessible information is going to change the landscape of personal inquiry. There is distrust in the system and people prefer to be be 'left to one's own devices'. It's very sad that the professionals we expect to rely on, can't help us in time, when we need it the most, when we are at our most vulnerable point.

  5. "So did you think about me?"
    "What do you mean?"
"Did you think about me when you entered that booth? Your Black female child-of-immigrants client?"
"No, I don't think about you like that. I come here to listen to your problems. That's my job."

    And that said everything

  6. the police love to make lawful orders almost as much as they love to defy them

“nope, we’re not helping you take this person to the hospital without their consent in spite of your 100% legal order to do so AND the department’s established policy of enforcing those orders. my lieutenant and sergeant also refuse. but hey, screaming in the person’s face about arresting them for trespassing? now you’ve got us super interested!”

  7. I've been fascinated for a while now by the use of computers and AI in mental health treatment. I think it all says so much about us as humans. I've been listening to this podcast called Shell Game where a guy gets his own AI voice agent to use in the real world. In this episode he discusses therapeutic use of AI and tries it out. It's super interesting.

  9. I just did the math and when I finally (3 yrs grad school plus 3 yrs full-time pre-licensure experience) get my (more expensive) license (which my employer doesn't pay for), I will qualify for a pay raise of

    drumroll

    ...$1.78 per hour

  10. When I asked him if he is getting any help from his own superior (the director) he shared that the director is not actually licensed, then when I asked if that was in alignment with agency policy/local regulations he stated "no comment". LMFAO. Guess we'll be going on a lil investigation spreeeeeeee

  11. I was looking for a photo of patients at an insane asylum getting involuntary "water treatment" for a joke, and there's just so much cool history stuff out there. I even discovered some of Pat Deegan's actual research/academic work, from before she became just another healthcare consultant, that I'm actually excited to watch:

  12. Initial goal: House 300 people in 1 year
    Spent in 1 year: $3,300,000.00
    People actually housed: 37
    People remaining houseless: 263

    Proportionally: $2,893,000 not spent on rent / 263 people still houseless / 12 months = $916.66/month

Average bare minimum 1br rent in Portland: $1300/month

    Any math majors??????????

  13. Imagine me going out to try to develop meaningful skills and relationships in the community, but no I must be physically available at all times so I must stay in the office for extremely important in-person meetings about meetings about meetings about

  14. Thinkin bout all the folks out there who therapists refuse to see or for whom "therapy/treatment" has been determined to be "contraindicated", for example personality disorders. Still shaking my head at the trainer who said a few weeks ago "i don't understand why ppl are so hesitant to diagnose personality disorders", then chose to exclusively use infamous serial killers as examples of PDs throughout the training. It's almost like things don't happen for no reason. #communitymentalhealth

  15. Another meeting about how we need to be having more meetings very cool and fun #communitymentalhealth

  16. Like if yall can't facilitate a culture of safety and won't even do a formal debriefing/review of critical incidents like the one last month, then I'm happy to utilize other available resources to promote a safe environment :)))))))) #communitymentalhealth

  18. I think if we could actually live in an anarchist society, I would still be a therapist because I could actually enact the ideal principle that a good therapist will eventually no longer be needed. The mental pathology industrial complex is so sad #anarchism #communitymentalhealth

  19. Today I learned about POSIWID and wow it's pretty much identical to something I keep on a sticky note at my desk for times when I feel helpless: "sometimes you can't meet the need, because then the need will have been met."

  21. Holy shit I did not know that private healthcare companies were doing telemarketing cold calls to community mental health providers "to see if you might be interested in ways to improve your program", but I just got one from 20 states away

  23. I've been thinking for years about why avoidance must be present in order to meet diagnostic criteria for PTSD. It's excluding so many people and situations where are triggers are very difficult/impossible to avoid. Took the screener myself and I met everything but the avoidance criterion. It smacks of "if you were really afraid of him, you'd leave" 🤔🤔

    guise, is this resilience????/

  24. Wish I was cool enough to be around ppl whose values surrounding #communitysafety are more like my own. But I am not, and my employer has their own ideas which make absolutely no sense. So I'm never responding to a crisis in my office building again. It'll be fine, 50 more people will arrive in that tiny cramped hallway to run around like headless chickens again and I'll just do my best to ignore. #communitymentalhealth

  25. You know that trope about how everyone should work in customer service for at least one year in their life to develop some sense of empathy/humility/self-reflection? There should be a choice between customer service or #communitymentalhealth

  26. love too attempt to provide therapy with nurses cackling their heads off in the office to my left and screaming infants being vaccinated on the right

really, i do enjoy a challenge.
