  1. Hey, I haven't talked about it recently, but here's a reminder of this thing that I'm doing: communitymedia.video/w/icMDFVm

Me and Connor and some of the other #NETV folks are taking the ideas behind #NewEllijayTelevision and #communityMedia national.

We've launch a youtube channel and a peertube channel and a website to help highlight independent and community media around the globe.

    Check out @communitybroadcasting.network

  2. Anyway, if you want #communityMedia and community focused alternatives to the products produced by the tech silos, it means we're all going to have to do a lot more work collecting, curating, sharing, and funding media production.

Community is inconvenient. Someone has to wash the dishes, someone has to peel the potatoes, someone has to write the 5000 word thinkpieces on American and Japanese soft power as evidenced by the way our various media have spread (and not spread) through the world.

  3. I've talked a lot about our toys, and why we make them, but I figure I should explain again.

I make the toys that I want to see in the world.

I've been collecting toys for years, but those toys are so often made by or in service of corporations that want to lock up our culture and burn our planet.

So I created my own characters, started writing, mined the public domain, and started making my own toys and telling my own stories.

Stories that don't enrich some far off corporation or overstuffed capitalist, toys that are made sustainably, by people who are being paid a reasonable amount of money.

We tell stories that reflect our values, it's #CommunityMedia, and we're making toys that reflect those values too.

It's one part #anticapitalism, on part #openculture, and a small dose of #smallThings

We can't do it without your support, so if you see something you like in the toys that we make, boost it. If you want something, and you can afford it, buy it.

Ask questions, help us tell stories.

    Thanks.

  8. California? "The legislation would fix a loophole in the existing law. While services like Netflix, Hulu and YouTube TV look increasingly like a cable package, they aren’t subject to the provisions of the law that require cable access fees to be collected. The bill would change that". #localnews #communitymedia whatworks.news/2026/01/11/cord

  9. If you're seeing my #publicDomain work, or seeing #NETV #NewEllijayTelevision for the first time, or even if you're already familiar with what we do and the ideas behind #communityMedia let me take this moment to make a small pitch:

New Ellijay Television needs advertisers to keep it going. Let me advertise your art project, indie website, small business, album, or other thing.

We'll stick you up on the Sponsor section of NewEllijay.News and run your 30 second spot at least 4x a day on our live stream and our cable network.

If you're not making much/any money on the thing you make, but you just want to get the word out, I'll run the ad for free.

If you're making money on the thing, and you want to get the word out to make more money, our packages for fedifolks start at $50/month.

    Let's talk.

  10. Sundog mentioned a moment ago that the AJC is going to stop it's print publication.

    retro.social/@[email protected]

And this started me back down the alternative newswire rabbit hole that I've been circling as I think about the future of #NewEllijayTelevision and what #communityMedia needs to become in order to meet this moment.

We have the infrastructure to reboot something like the Underground Press Syndicate ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Undergro .)

It would be easier and cheaper and more valuable today than it was in the 60s and 70s. We could have a digital and print distribution that actually spans the globe.

We could enable local news and media organizations to expand their reach well beyond their current limitations, and I'm positive that there is a way to make it self sustaining, and even profitable (What that way is, I don't know! I'm just certain that there must be one.)

  11. Who's going to make Breaking Good?

The story of a white American Republican dad that works hard his whole life, only to be exposed to asbestos at his mine job, and get a terminal diagnosis.

But instead of making meth, he starts taking out oligarchs.

    Who's going to make that?

    #CommunityMedia #DIYTV #ResINT #Oligarchs #BreakingGood #USPol #TTJ

  12. Anyway, all of that is to say: The fact that Paramount controls what can and can't be #starTrek is why we need #communityMedia

and it's why I started working on #JupitersGhost

No one can tell you what to do with the #SolarFederation, not even me!

Well, that's not entirely true. I can tell you one thing: whatever you do with the #JG universe you have to give back to the JG universe ( #CCBYSA)

But, if you find yourself looking for a place to tell space stories, and you want to settle in to an existing universe rather than writing your own, take a look at intergalactic.computer/social

  13. It's against this landscape of #enshittificaton and scrounging for the last half acre ( vod.newellijay.tv/w/83McEYqJpC ) that I am building our #CommunityMedia projects, and attempting to imbue them with #revolutionaryJoy

We make toys of our own original characters, most of which are cc-by-sa, or of public domain characters. We help other people make their own toys. (And we do it with direct recycled plastics and soon with biodegradable plastics.)

We make television programs (like the one I linked above) and podcasts to tell stories that are otherwise missing from the airwaves or to celebrate our community or just because we want to. We help other people make and distribute their own television.

We make video games and publish comic books and just generally try to provide an alternative to all the various kinds of media that are currently produced by four or five companies who would gladly see this nation fall to fascism if it meant making a buck.

  14. I love the toy work I'm doing right now, and it seems pretty likely that it's going to pay my bills (and the bills for several other members of our community) for a while.

People like what we're doing, and we're in demand. We're meeting with clients tonight. We're meeting with clients on Saturday. We're emailing clients every twenty minutes.

It's good! And it is absolutely part of the same #CommunityMedia movement that led me to create #NETV.

But it's only *part* of the #communityMedia thing. We need the media. I need to figure out a way to make the production and distribution of independent media financially viable in small batches.

  15. "This is the blueprint for a revolution in the creation and distribution of media. We will discuss how and why to produce your own television using free tools, and explore how to use Community Television as an instrument for social change.

This text is divided in to three sections: A manual, a meta-manual, and a look back. These can be consumed in any order."

  16. Okay #CES #CommunityEntertainmentSystem

Let's start with what and why and then get in to how and talk about plans.

    What?

It's a box that plays #CommunityMedia (which you can learn about at communitymedia.network among other places.)

Basically, I want some independent radio streams and television networks and whatever is happening on peertube.

    Independent, community media.

But also, let the thing play some video games, yeah?

Games are media, and small games and community centered games are very good, and I want people to be able to play the games I make in the same place where they watch the television I produce, and listen to the music I distribute.

And I'm not alone in making these things, and putting together a common distribution mechanism for them would be helpful.

  17. I'm working on a mixtape.

    It's all #smallthings and #CommunityMedia

It'll be a multimedia experience presented on a dvd-r, featuring cc-by and cc-by-sa stuff, plus material from artists who have directly consented to inclusion and a handful of things from artists that I'm unable to contact but pretty sure wouldn't mind.

Included on the disc will be a catalog of what each thing is, and where you can find more, and who you can pay for it if you like it.

I'll be selling copies of this mixtape for $5 + media mail shipping within the united states.

Each copy will come with a small print catalog highlighting music and other media that I sell, and stuff that my friends make, and stuff that I've found around the world. Each of these things will have a description and a URL and possibly also a mailing address where you can buy copies.

I'm planning to do this once a quarter, but we'll see what happens when the rubber hits the road.

  18. Speaking of #Community (not the show), what is one thing that can either bring a community together or drive it apart?

Media. Music, TV, film & news

Do you trust the #billionaires & their corporations to produce those things in ways that benefit & foster community?

    Hell no! :blobcatreeeeeee:

This will be a thread about #CommunityMedia. Why and how we should make it. 🧵

The impetus for and some of the details of this are found in this free #zine.

    communitymedia.network/

It is focused on #DIYTV as that is what @ajroach42 was thinking about as he was launching #NETV but I would like to discuss how these concepts might be applied to other media. That means feedback from you & I would love to hear your thoughts.

Need a kick in the pants?

Don't want to do it alone? #ArtFED is always looking for collaborators and comrades.

  19. TV is the AM radio of the modern age. It's time to push the Overton window back & to the left.

#DIYTV & #CommunityMedia are the way. #NETV is doing it today. Will you do it tomorrow?

Sound good? Have I got the #zine for you!

  21. The story of the diverse community media renaissance on Aotea (Great Barrier Island) suggests that media storytelling and representation might work better when produced at a local scale, even if it's more commercially profitable at the largest possible scale.

  22. I wrote a book about the history, theory, and practice of DIY media as a tool for social change.

You can find it online, cc-by-sa, at communitymedia.network

I'm working on a new print edition, with some additions, several revisions, new code examples, and other general improvements.

Meanwhile, good community journalists caught in the crossfire are at risk.

  25. The rise of streaming services, as was just pointed out by @fifilamoura ( eldritch.cafe/@fifilamoura/110 ) has resulted in pitting studios against the tech industry.

Over the last 30 years it has seemed as if the entertainment industry and the tech industry both had endless supplies of money.

But now we're watching the birth of the #communityMedia revolution, the #DIYTV revolution.

This is exactly the kind of thing that I've been writing about at communitymedia.network

See, tech companies have grown to enormous, impossible sizes. Media companies have grown to enormous impossible sizes. Their only option for continuing to exist is to continue to grow, but the world is changing around them, and there are no new realms for them to conquer.
