  1. So, this is a real good use for mansions and estates everywhere -- #CommunityHousing !

We all share a 15-acre Georgian mansion for the price of a two-bed house

    Natalie Grice, 29 August 2026

"Dreams of living in a Georgian manor house with 15 acres of grounds would usually be associated with a big lottery win.

"But for the residents of Dol-llys Hall on the outskirts of Llanidloes, Powys, no windfall was necessary.

"The Grade II listed building is home to a collection of ordinary people who have chosen to live cooperatively - sharing responsibility for maintaining the home and its grounds and trying to live as sustainably as possible.

" 'You have got a ready-made village mentality where people just help each other out,' says Louise Robinson, one of the longest serving of 10 residents at the hall.

" 'There's six other flats going 'what can we do?' And that means a lot."
Louise Nicholson is a middle-aged white woman with shoulder length dark grey hair. She wears grey framed photo-reactive glasses, a light blue v-neck t-shirt with a lily pad white emblem on the front. She is smiling at the camera. Behind her is the main entrance to Dol-llys Hall. There are two dark wooden doors with arched fanlights above which open from the middle of a curved porch-type entrance. The building is painted yellowy-cream. There are arched windows to the left of the door visible. A mop handle and a piece of wooden furniture can be seen to the right of the doors.

"The hall, which has served as a school and a care home as well as a former stately home over the years, now holds seven flats within its walls and a number of #communal living areas and #SharedFacilities like washing machines and heating.

"Louise first came across Dol-llys after she was made redundant from her insurance job in London. She found herself spending more and more time away from the city, enjoying walking in the rural countryside, and realised she wanted to live there permanently.

" 'I'm a single person, so moving to a country village on your own is not that easy,' she says.

" 'Somebody mentioned [intentional] communities and said 'have you heard about them?''

"After investigating quite a few, she knew she did not want to live somewhere where she only had a bedroom and everything else was shared. And at Dol-llys, where she moved in early 2020, she found the perfect combination of community and privacy.

" 'We term ourselves as #cohousing, because we all have our separate flats,' she says, and that the set-up is not a commune.

" 'We share the grounds, we share the common rooms, we share responsibilities and decision-making, but we all have our front doors, which I think is important to everybody who chooses to live here.' "

  3. New neighbours moving into the front unit. I don’t know if it’s a couple or a single, but there’s a young pregnant woman with a young child at the very least. She seems quite young & we exchanged names.
I saw her on Thursday when I was in the front garden with the young child as the child was waving to me from an upstairs window 😂. Fingers crossed for good neighbours. #CommunityHousing.

  4. I’m all flu jabbed & feeling fine although I’m sure my arm will complain when I roll over onto it tonight 💉 😁 & my Covid jab 💉 booked for a week on Thursday.
I’ve topped up my groceries & bought some more bread flour so bread making is in my future & now I’m home for the rest of the day.
Still having to ask tradies to move their vehicles so I can get down the driveway. They’re still working on him next doors bathroom. It’s a pain in the butt, although they’re very good about it. Parking is shocking around here. Sparky & painters there today. I’m beginning to feel like the nosy neighbour as it’s usually quiet around here & I’m not used to the constant outside noises 😬.

  5. I’m a firm supporter of community housing models and was encouraged when council members Morales and Mosqueda visited Vienna and Nordic cities to observe and discuss housing with local officials and organizations, pre-pandemic. The real estate industry’s reliance on capitalist models here depends on boom and bust, prioritizes profits, exacerbating housing inequality, subverting community in elections. Media controlled backlash set us back, obscured visions.

  6. Erica C Barnett has been critical of Housing Our Neighbors proposals in the past and offers perspectives on potential Seattle Council misdirections on the community housing funding. The previous council’s move of Jump Start funds from small business and other pandemic relief to the general fund is a painful lesson in the ways reactionary Seattle subverts progressive solutions. Current budget deficits are looming.

  7. Indeed, residents of Puerto Rico say that living here is an “extreme sport” because we juggle the lack of dependable infrastructure, frequent power and water outages, political corruption stemming from centuries of colonialism, abysmal healthcare, and other daily reminders of the extreme inequity.

  8. Katie Wilson seems to have a lot of compassion for city dwellers, respect for city workers and continuing interest in community organizing. Journalists may be more obsessed with controversial topics including the Seattle Police Department. I say, a majority of Seattle residents can lead the way on that.

  9. The most well-known types of #communityhousing ownership include community #landtrusts (CLTs) and #housingcooperatives. The permanent real estate #cooperative (PREC) is a new hybrid model that combines elements of each.

  10. I just had a series of conversations where I learned Home Economics classes are apparently not a universal experience for my peers. I think maybe it's part of why I've had such a hard time living with folks, because I thought we all had the same education on basic life-skills, and I was the only one who gave enough of a rip to wash the dishes the right way.

I also didn't know it was considered regressive (when it was considered at all), as I thought it was part of an initiative to make sure folks knew how to do basic life-skills, regardless of gender.

This video definitely was educational for me:

  12. Seattle election results tonight: Proposition 1A appears passing (57%) community housing with progressive funding: a tax on companies with salaries over $1M. Seattle Chamber of Commerce and most of Council, Mayor, etc measure 1B appears overcome. In Seattle, it takes a few days to count all the votes, but later votes tend progressive.

  13. #Hello, new platform. I'm doing up a proper #intro / #introduction / #introductions with my tags so I can get amongst it properly. I've come from Twitter, where I did some fun work swearing at #Centrelink and getting hassled by LNP senators after giving evidence at the robodebt inquiry. I'm an unashamed #armchairactivism participant, giving media interviews from the comfort of my couch.

So! I am here for #auspol especially things like #robodebt and other #socialwelfare issues, #auslaw especially #adminlaw etc, #socialhousing #communityhousing #publichousing activism because I'm stuck in a decrepit shithole making my health worse, #publichealth #aushealthcare #Medicare to rant about crippled universal healthcare, #WApolitics because #WALabor is a conservative shitshow atm, #mentalhealth #disability #chronicillness rights and not just for #COVID19 #COVID #longCOVID, #LGBT #queer #gender #trans equity, strictly #intersectional #feminism (I will mercilessly ridicule TERFs and SWERFs), #climatecrisis #climatechange as it disproportionately affects already disadvantaged people, and I will need #cats as a palate cleanser between whingetoots. I'm a staunch #Greens supporter and consider state & federal #Labor to have become class traitors in the global push towards a capitalist dystopia that leaves vulnerable people behind.

Obviously I'm a raging progressive, and I look forward to getting to know more of the same because I like my echo chamber loud xox :blobcatboop:
