Sigh..just sat down to do a funding application for our #CommunityFridge to discover the charity is now using a portal. In theory.. fine.. saves having to input basic data every time.. but.. it quickly became clear it was US based, the questions to register our organisation were odd and seemed a bit dodgy, do funders really need to know tax references? Usually they just ask charity or company number and board info, accounts etc all are available to see online. Felt like some data harvesting AI thing so stopped and searched a bit to discover the portal is run by US firm #Blackbaud who have an appalling track record of hacks and lax data security. Not only that, they have also recently teamed up with #Anthropic to use #Claude more in the non-profit sector. They are clearly only using a UK Charity Commission database to verify organisations are real. If you are a CIC or other sort of non-profit have to go through incredibly complex hoops including vast amounts of paperwork and submit director ID and they (or Claude) still may decide you don't qualify. So ..for a £2500 grant that we had a very slim chance of getting anyway.. no thanks, I'll leave well alone.

He has been watching all the Eurovision songs in advance and rating them, now moved on to football pundit chat then going to meet friends to watch the final with some friends. I'm going to pot up tomato plants and do some cooking with #CommunityFridge leftovers!

One of the things I love about running our #CommunityFridge is the people who end up getting some free stuff unexpectedly. I gave away several bunches of flowers to passers by as I walked from the car to the office and left a box of fruit, bags of sprouts and small cauliflowers for a large book group who meet at the Quakers. They were all delighted with their free goodies 😆

Seeds are magic. Put a bag of compost with plum and damson stones in the bottom of the salad drawer in the fridge several weeks ago to stratify.. completely forgot about them. All the stones are now sprouting happily. These were just stones saved from fruit we got at the #CommunityFridge so will pot them up, keep an eye and pass them on when they get a bit bigger. #permaculture #SeedSaving #allotment #gardening

I realise very few of you on here live close enough to do this.. but our #CommunityFridge in #Settle is one of the chosen good causes for the #Coop #LocalCommunityFund so we will get a % of what our supporters spend on their shopping. If you are a member and shop at the Coop anywhere in the UK you can select and support projects within 15 miles of your address - it really does make a difference. If you are in a position to support local organisations doing good work then please #donate your time or money.. it makes a huge difference. Have look at what #Charity #CommunityBusiness or church or other smaller groups are actually doing where you live - it rarely is the large national charities who advertise on TV or online that do the real work. There are various online fundraising websites and most will add gift aid if you are a UK tax payer.. a blatant plug for our #CommunityFridge and #PublicLivingRoom but other good causes are available! https://www.goodhub.com/go/settle-community-and-business-hub

I've brought home some leftover stuff from the #CommunityFridge which has inspired husband to do some 'experimental' baking. He is an excellent cook.. but .. I confess I have concerns about his plan for tarragon and apple cake. Will report back later.

Popped over to the outdoor cafe at our local theatre for some sustenance as I'm in the office working on a big funding application that needs to be in by Monday. We give them a lot of stuff from our #CommunityFridge so they are very generous to us but this is three times bigger than their 'normal' portions! I promise I won't eat it all at once...

We've acquired a sturdy vacuum packing gadget for free at the #CommunityFridge. No instructions but been experimenting with it this afternoon. We are often given 3kg or 5kg bags of pasta, rice, lentils etc which are far too big for most people. I've just decanted those into smaller packs which will be easier to offload. Most amused that the fusilli pasta was so sharp it popped the bags when vac packing!

Running the #CommunityFridge means sometimes having lots of flowers to re-home .. had 12 bunches today so several of our regulars took one home from our #PublicLivingRoom. I gave some to random strangers in the car park and the last bunch went to one of the women in the launderette near our office. Saw her going home later grinning while clutching her flowers. #RandomActOfKindness 💐😃

Well today's #CommunityFridge win involved rehoming about 120 small packs of flower plants and some hanging baskets that we'd acquired from the co op on Friday.. they often dry out or don't get watered enough..so a weekend rehydrating and some tlc and 95% of them were fine..rest are off to the compost heap. Only 4 trays left now plus a few tomato and chard plants we'd been given🌱🙂

Husband works at the #CourtyardDairy and we often acquire free samples of cheese or related things.. today I am experimenting with various milk based recipes using a super lively Turkish yoghurt culture. Will report back but 2 large batches of yog and some paneer on the go so far..and will make labneh with some of the yog. Even better we had a large donation of milk to our #CommunityFridge yesterday so didn't need to buy any. Now just need some ideas of what to do with all the whey! #CheeseMaking #SurplusFood

Not needed to use it for a few days but must reorganise tomorrow to make space to collect #CommunityFridge food donations! #gardening #allotment #AllotmentLife #permaculture #GrowYourOwn

It took 5 days to fully funded our Reisterstown #CommunityFridge and #PeriodPantry. All those $5+ donations added up. Thanks to all who shared the link and gave $$. All funds past this point will go towards stocking the pantry. I'm excited about next steps. #MutualAid #Baltimore

A #CommunityFridge sad plant update after yesterdays donation of many dry or over watered bedding plants. After a bit of tidying up of dead leaves and some serious rehydration overnight they are looking fine. Only 3 plants were properly dead. Some have gone into hanging baskets, many have been picked up by local residents and shopkeepers - still about another 30 to rehome next week.

Well today's random donation to the #CommunityFridge was around 100 pots of primroses and pansies from the supermarket that had either dried out completely or been over watered and nearly died. About 30 were absolutely fine and the rest needed tidying up dead bits so left them all soaking in water overnight and will see how they are in the morning. Will use some to make hanging baskets and give lots to the outdoor cafe at our local theatre and the rest can go to anyone who wants them via the #CommunityFridge.

Well today's random donation for the #CommunityFridge is 36 bottles of this horrid looking nutritional supplement..mango and passion fruit flavour. Oddly we can shift these easily..know a couple of people who like them and these are vegan and gluten free so local wildlife rescue can use them for some of their injured animals.

Got given a batch of very old fruit and veg seeds and done some germination testing (most have 50 - 70% germination rates which is pretty good). Thought I'd just plant these globe artichoke seeds and give them a try. Seeds are allegedly best sown before 2017. I soaked them for a few days in water and then put in a covered seed tray in my car to act as a mini greenhouse. 2 weeks later half have come up. It really does annoy me the hype from seed sellers that you must use new seeds - it is true for some veg but for most things it really isn't! For anyone concerned about where I'm going to plant a dozen globe artichokes which will grow into enormous plants.. will give most away through our #CommunityFridge and keep one. #permaculture #GrowYourOwn #Allotment #AllotmentLife
