  1. I want to say that this will be the weekend I finish planting the #FourSisters garden. The squash got a little beaten up from the rain (but I have more to plant), but the Hopi Blue corn is still there! The Sweet Potato plant might have to go though. We'll see...The container potatoes greening out, and I just picked up more seed onions for containers as well. The Community Gardeners are into doing a plant swap -- it will be nice to share with others. Our 3-season porch is pretty much a greenhouse, and I'd like to turn it back into a library again (with a few hanging plants).

'Si hortum in bibliotheca habes, deerit nihil."

"If you have a garden and a library, you will need nothing else." - Marcus Tullius #Cicero (my translation).

  2. So, I'm going to talk to the #CommunityGarden organizers about having a "Free Plant" table or spot -- with some signage. That way, if folks (like myself) have too many seedlings, we can give them to someone who can use them!

  3. Oh boy... I have way more paprika pepper seedlings than I thought I'd have (using fresh seeds helps). I'll be giving away the extras to folks at the #CommunityGarden. Things are moving along... The water tank is getting filled up next week and the new fencing will be installed soon. As soon as that's in place, neighbor friend and I will start planting sunflowers and corn.

  5. So, neighbor buddy is growing sweet corn in the #CommunityGarden with his son (and is renting two plots). He loves that I'll be growing #HopiBlueCorn in my home garden and wants to exchange corn kernels once we harvest! Yay! And he has the plots next to mine. Community gardens aren't just about growing food -- they're about #BuildingCommunity !

  6. Well, my selectboard neighbor buddy (who was the one who is getting the #CommunityGarden going again) wants to grow corn (probably for the same reasons I wanted to -- to have two varieties!). No worries. I can grow just the Hopi Blue corn in my garden, and other goodies (Sunflowers, Indian Blanket, Anasazi Beans) in the community one.

  7. I just secured my plot in the north section! I'll be growing Mammoth Sunflowers and Hopi Blue Corn (drought resistant)! I'm so glad this is happening!

  8. Alrighty then. I found some nearby #CommunityGardens, and also some good materials from #UMaineCooperativeExtension , including guidelines!

I'm also going to suggest that the town money be used for these expenses...

    - Electric Fence? (If needed)
    - Soil Testing?
    - Materials to build compost bins?
    - Water tank?
    - Water source for refilling tank (compensation)?
    - Markers to mark out plots?

  9. #Online - #CommunityGardens and #FoodSecurity in Maine

    April 14 @ 6:00 pm - 7:15 pm
    Cost: $0 - $15

"This webinar is hosted by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension.

Across Maine, community gardens are increasing food security by bringing people together to grow food for their communities. This panel will explore how collective garden spaces allow neighbors to work side by side to grow fresh, local food that is donated to food security organizations. Panelists will share real examples from across Maine and offer practical insights into how community gardens get started, build partnerships, and grow into lasting resources that strengthen local communities.

Speakers: Rachel Stamieszkin, Master Gardener Volunteer in Cumberland County, Johnny Sanchez, Collective Gardens Program Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator at #FoodAndMedicine (FAM), and Julia St. Clair, Agricultural Programs Manager at #BrunswickTopshamLandTrust."

  10. If nothing else, I'll plant some sunflowers and maybe some corn -- things that I don't quite have room for in my small vegetable plot (and then I'll focus on growing more smaller veggies -- like beets, tomatoes, potatoes, etc.)!

  11. DO YOU COMPOST? There's an app for that!

A free and open source app to help pair up people who compost with people who have food waste. You can register as either option to help connect with neighbours, community gardens, or local businesses.
