  1. Highway Adoption

The truck ahead of me has a bumper sticker that says “Stay in your lane.”

At first blush – good advice. But further introspection reveals a flaw. In truth, the lane I am currently in is not my own. Nor is the lane you are in yours either. None of us can lay claim to these streets. At least not individually. Contrary to popular belief, we are a collective.

Perhaps a truer bumper sticker is the one that says “Share the road.”

Namely, the entire road is for all. The lane I am in is not MY lane. It is available to anyone else who needs it. You are welcome in the lane I am in, and I hope that I am welcome in the one you are in.

Alas, too often I forget this truth. I am too quick with my tongue or horn and too slow with a kind gesture.

    So come on over.

You are welcome here in this lane as well.

No schedule. No perceived deadline for my ETA. No stress or emotional attachment to the human construct of time. No amount of hubris or disdain.

Nothing is worth the destruction of a hospitable spirit while one is driving.
