Started testing my Commodore 1570 disk drive, but the sailing ain't smooth tonight. Got a couple of "file not found" errors before the drive's power supply suddenly failed. No magic smoke, but something was getting hot and smelling toasty. Wasn't too hard to find the faulty component, it was rather large - this massive Roe capacitor. Too bad, now I have to put in a Digikey order and it'll be a few days before I can try to fix it. #commodore #commodore1570 #retrocomputing

My Commodore 1570 disk drive is fairly clean and looks good on the inside, no signs of corrosion or bulging capacitors. Quite quirky this one - the mainboard is obviously meant for something else (that being the 1571 in a totally different case). It's screwed into a metal plate with custom mounts to make it sit in the 1541-style case. The footprints for the 6-pin DIN serial connectors (front right in the picture) aren't in the right position to fit the ports in the back, and are wired up to a daughterboard in the back that also functions as the unit's power supply. There's also bodge wires galore on both sides on the PCB. The engineers did what they had to do to make it work, love it! #commodore #commodore1570 #commodore128 #retrocomputing
