Si la tranquillité de l’eau permet de refléter les choses, que ne peut celle de l’esprit ? Le vide, la tranquillité, le détachement, l’insipidité, le silence, le non-agir sont le niveau de l’équilibre de l’univers, la perfection de la voie et de la vertu. Ce vide confère à l’âme une tranquillité qui fait que toute action accomplie est efficace. Qui garde sa tranquillité n’agit pas : il laisse ce soin à ceux qui reçoivent mission d’agir. Heureux celui qui n’agit pas ! il ne connaît ni chagrin ni misère et il vit longtemps.

Au commencement il y avait le néant, le néant n’avait pas de nom. De là se reproduisit l’un ; il y eut l’un sans avoir de forme matérielle. Les êtres en naquirent : c’est ce qu’on appelle sa vertu. Dans ce qui n’avait pas de forme, il y eut une distribution d’où s’ensuivit un mouvement perpétuel qui a pour nom Destin. Au cours de ses transformations sont nés les êtres. A son achèvement, l’être créé possède un corps organisé. Ce corps préserve l’âme. L’âme et le corps sont soumis à leurs lois propres. C’est ce qu’on appelle la nature innée. Qui perfectionne sa nature fait retour à sa vertu originelle. Qui atteint à sa vertu primitive s’identifie avec l’origine de l’univers et par elle avec le vide. Le vide est grandeur. Il est pareil à l’oiseau qui chante spontanément et s’identifie avec l’univers. C’est lorsqu’il s’identifie parfaitement avec l’univers qu’il apparaît ignorant et obscur. Il atteint à la vertu profonde et s’abîme dans l’harmonie universelle.

Le maître dit : « Le Tao recouvre et soutient tous les êtres. » Infinie est sa grandeur ! Le sage doit faire table rase de son esprit pour le comprendre ; pratiquer le non-agir, voilà le ciel ; exprimer le sans-parole, voilà la vertu. Aimer les hommes et être bon envers les êtres, voilà la bonté. Considérer comme identiques les différences, voilà la grandeur. Ne se montrer ni hautain ni excentrique, voilà la largeur d’esprit. Embrasser la variété des différences, voilà la richesse. S’attacher à la vertu, voilà la règle. C’est par la vertu que s’affirme la personnalité de l’homme. Qui se conforme en toutes choses au Tao est armé contre les coups du sort. Qui ne se laisse décourager par la vicissitude des évènements extérieurs garde l’intégrité de son caractère. Le sage qui comprend ces dix préceptes possède la grandeur d’âme, tous les êtres affluent en lui. Un tel homme enfouit l’or dans les montagnes et les perles dans les eaux profondes. Il dédaigne les biens de ce monde et se tient à distance des nobles et des riches. Il ne jouit pas de sa longueur ne s’afflige point d’une mort prématurée ; il ne tire pas gloire de ses succès et n’est pas humilié par la pauvreté. Dût-il posséder la richesse du monde entier, qu’il ne la considère pas comme son lot personnel. Dû-t-il régner sur le monde entier, qu’il n’en tire pas une gloire personnelle. Qui se glorifie s’exhibe. Tous les êtres ne font qu’un. La vie et la mort sont identifiées.
