  1. For those interested in numbers:

    • 30 multiplexes of 8 MHz, 256-QAM, with bitrate of 50.69 Mbps each
    • 1 multiplex of 8 MHz, 64-QAM, with bitrate of 38.01 Mbps

Across all of those, approx 574 Mbps is wasted. That means you can drop 11 out of 31 multiplexes without any changes in channel bitrates. This would free up 88 MHz for e.g. cable internet use.

  2. They are in fact planning changes in a few weeks which are supposed to remove SD versions of channels to "give more bandwidth to internet", so here's to hoping they'll also consolidate the muxes and maybe change the bitrates a bit? Will be interesting to see :>

  3. Out of curiosity captured transport streams of my cable TV provider (who also does internet over DOCSIS), and it's so sad. You can see the effect of TV channels going away, and the space they previously occupied remaining unused.

So much stuffing that could've otherwise been used for either better video bitrate or (after consolidating muxes) more DOCSIS channels.

Here's a screenshot of the worst offender. How would you like 36 megabits of *nothing*?
