The first episode of #TheOtherBlackGirl, a #Hulu original series, really felt a lot like #TheBaby (#HBO / #Max), and the music really adds to that sense of creepy unease.

I liked it, but I also find this kind of eerie #comedic #thriller very stressful because of the constant dread.

Hello! Here's my semi-occasional, not frequent enough to be routine #introduction for any new folks joining the #fediverse or whatever they call it.

I #write #literary #fiction or #litfic as dudes who drink IPAs might call it before launching into a spiel on David Foster Wallace. And to make things harder on myself, I write #comedic literary fiction. I'm currently working on my 2nd novel (a #satire because I'm an optimist).

Here's some #writingadvice: Go for the joke. Seriously. No matter the level of drama or danger, all stories and their readers deserve #comedic relief. Go for it!

I don't mean Dad jokes, or stand-up, unless you're writing The Marvelous Mrs. Mazel. It can be subtle or outrageous. It ought be on point and move the story forward, not gratuitous. Character's thoughts, spoken #malapropisms, ribbing—they all work. A #smartass character (esp. if the reader is privy to their thoughts) is always an option. There are plenty of ways appropriate for your #storytelling to ratchet up the #comedy.

I #challenge you to write a scene going for the joke, and post it with #goforthejoke. Here is mine:

My bodyguard spun a dining chair around to sit beside me. "If you were my daughter, I would tell you it's time to pack up your toys and go home."

"How old is your daughter?"

"Seven. That's not the point! Everyone in the syndicate knows that Felipe's lieutenant is trouble."

"Are you worried he might try to seduce me? Be worried for him!" I chuckled, but when I looked into her blue eyes, they speared me.

"You're getting emotionally involved."

I snorted, then giggled.

My bodyguard shook her head in disgust, not crediting me that I was the predator here.

The climaxes in #ModernFamily, where everyone comes together to reveal their #neuroses to #comedic effect are no longer represent reality for most.

#Seinfeld is so far removed from reality its a joke inside a joke.

But they act as #hallucinations, people can live through their memory of those scenes.

Maybe they're a reminder of how to behave in social settings, but if that were the case they are not great examples, with outdated #consumeristic ideas, #highrise living glorification etc.
